Balanced precariously on a beam, high in the ceiling of the training room, Simon fought the urge to look down. His eyes were focused on the empty space in front of him. The absence of a safety harness heightening the sense of danger and strangely his concentration. Below him he was aware that Jace had laid out giant crash mats that were taller than him, they would absorb the impact if Simon was to fall unskillfully from the roof. However, Jace had made it very clear in his brilliantly charming way, that they wouldn't stop him from braking a leg or two if he did fall incorrectly.
"Balance!" Jace barked from below Simon. At the moment the only thing he had instructed the dark haired boy to do was stand on the beam and not look down. Two things of which Simon was finding very difficult to do.
As it turned out Jace and Alec would be teaching Simon today, whilst the other trainees moved on to knife throwing. Needless to say, Simon was behind.
Just then the doors to the training room swung open and in slipped Alec. Quickly followed by Isabelle. Simon stared intensely at the pair, jealous at first, until he remembered that they were siblings and Alec was gay. Now all he could think about was Isabelle, and how she was probably watching him with scrutinizing eyes, from across the room.
But no, to Simon's dismay she was making a beeline for Jace. Simon followed her perfect slender figure as she glided across the room. When she stopped next to Jace, Simon abruptly realized that he was looking down.
Quickly what little balance he had began to fade before he could correct himself he was falling, not too gracefully, onto the crash mat. The wind from his impact puffed out of the seems on the mat, blowing Isabelle's hair back out of her face revealing her dark brown eyes. She was staring at Simon. He thought that she might seem concerned, but instead he was met by a slight disinterest. Maybe she didn't love him now, maybe she still loved the old Simon that was a Vampire and could do loads of cool things and wouldn't have batted an eyelid at standing on a beam meters in the air.
Jace and Alec both reached their arms across the mat to a gasping Simon. The impact of the fall had knocked the air out of him and he found himself gasping like a fish.
"Nice of you to drop in" Alec snickered. Isabelle playfully slapped him on the shoulder, but a smirk was spread on her face. Not to be out done Simon retaliated, taking the other boys hand.
"Nice of you to show up" He gave Alec a wink as he was dragged off of the mat.
"Stop flirting Simon, he has a boyfriend" Isabelle scolded, a smile increasing its territory on her face.
"Yeah and you have a girlfriend" Jace slapped his hand down on Simon's shoulder. "Now get back up there" He pointed to the beam that Simon had just fallen from and shoved him powerfully towards the ladder on the wall at the other end of the room. Simon obliged, loping towards the ladder.
"So fancy coming back to the institute tonight?" Isabelle was at the side of him, effortlessly keeping pace with his stride. He looked at her shocked and then nodded at her. She winked over her shoulder as she exited the training room and Simon, forgetting to look in front of him, walked into the wall.
