Chapter Three
"I'm hungry," My little brother complains.
"I don't care," My older sister says.
I rolled my eyes and turned around to look at him in the booster seat.
"Here," I handed him a piece of my chocolate.
He smiles brightly, "Thank you Vanessa!"
Annie scoffs. "Why the hell did you even do that? We're going to McDonald's for Christ's sake!"
"He's hungry. It's only a little piece of chocolate anyway."
Annie turns to glare at me. "Yeah, whatever."
I sighed at my older sister's bad attitude. She never really liked me anyway. Not after she found out I had no power.
Apparently, to her I was a complete embarrassment.
Well I don't blame her. I am an embarrassment.
Even mom and dad prefer her and my little brother more than me.
It's sad, now that I think about it. People don't like me because I'm different. They judge me because of my lack of power. They don't care about character at all. They just care about the people who are the same as them.
I wish I met somebody who knew what I felt.
--
The alarm clock rang and I quickly went to turn it off.
I groaned loudly and got up, preparing myself for another day of hell/school.
I put on a band t shirt and an oversized sweater. Then I wore some black leggings with some boots. This was the clothes I typically wore each day.
I wouldn't really call myself attractive, but I really wasn't that ugly. I mean, guys have asked me out before and I turned them all down. Only because of Alec though.
And once they found out I was powerless, they all sort of just ran away.
I brushed my long black hair and made a fishtail braid.
Then I grab my bag and head downstairs.
"Good morning Sunshine," I hear Alec say.
I give him a glare as he sat in my kitchen table eating breakfast.
"Morning Brown," I say icily.
He was wearing that stupid grin I always see. He's so lucky that he's a family friend or I would have drop kicked that fool by now.
He's usually here during the morning and he usually refrains from making rude comments about me. Even when my parents are gone and we're both home alone, he tends to be a bit more quiet.
"You know," I hear mum say as she continued to chop some stuff up near the sink, "I never hear you call Alec by his first name anymore, Vanessa."
"Things have changed," I say nonchalantly.
I keep stuff like Alec picking on me away from my parents. I didn't want them to know and they probably won't even believe me. I was already a disappointment to them and they don't really care about me anymore.
Mum just pretends that she does and dad ignores me most of the time. It hurts, actually. It hurts a lot.
Alec stares at me with an inscrutable expression before he goes back eating his food.
I sit in the chair across from him and start eating my breakfast. I only got to eat a little bit before my sister comes marching in with a dress that barely covered her butt and a face loaded with makeup.
"Hey baby," She purred at Alec.
And there goes my appetite.
I pushed my plate away and faked a gag.
Alec smiles a little bit in amusement at me but stops immediately. He cleared his throat and stood up quickly.
"Oh won't you look at the time," He checks his watch. "I need to get to school early. Thank you for the meal, Mrs. Caraway. Let's get going ladies."
He glances at Annie before grimacing and walks quickly to his car.
Well at least I know that he still had an intense dislike for her.
I wish Alec never got popular. I wish he would still be there for me right now. And then maybe, things would've turned out differently.
I shook my head and grabbed my bag. Annie was already out the door and I grabbed the plates and hand them over to mum.
"Thank you sweetheart," Mum smiles. "Have a great day at school."
"Thanks mum," I reply and give her a peck on the cheek.
I walked out the door and for a split second, I turned around and found her wiping her cheek with her hand. There was a small frown on her face.
What a great start to my day.
