WARNING NOT EDITED...AGAIN. I'M SORRY. I REALLY AM.
Being from New York, you never really notice the small things about it that make it so unique. Even though I was't from the heart of Manhattan, there were still things that I overlooked whereas tourists didn't. Things like the abundance of lights, or how everywhere you looked there was at least 20 people walking somewhere, or even how when you looked out on the street it was a sea of yellow with a couple specks of colour here and there.
But these were all things I did't notice until others pointed them out to me. Things I just took for granted. The colours and the sights were part of my everyday routine, and even when I moved away from it, it feels like I never left.
"This is so crazy. It's nothing like home. All the people, and the cars, it's just so crazy." Cole was looking around with the biggest eyes. We were in a taxi on the way to our hotel. We had to get a van, because there were four of us, but it was still the same feeling. The rush and bustle of New York would never change.
"Why are all the cab's yellow? Don't they know they can get cars in other colors?" Gracie asked my aunt, who just laughed and proceeded to absorb all the sights, even if it wasn't her first time there.
"There's so many people here." Cole added.
"I just love it here." I smiled and reminded myself of all the things I missed about New York. Yes, I had bad memories, but that wasn't associated with New York, it was associated with my old home, and we weren't anywhere near that.
"It's changed so much since I've been here last. It's been so manny years." Grandma looked longingly out the window, reminiscing.
"When did you first come here?" My aunt asked her, peaked with interest. We all looked at Grandma, waiting for a story.
"When Marvin and I first got married. We drover here from our house the second our wedding ended. He wanted to see the lights and all the hotels, and I wanted to see broadway, so we spent our honeymoon here. The hotel we stayed in was way off of the tourist track, but it was the best trip I've ever taken. I'll never forget it."
"That sounds lovely, Mrs. Tinley." Dawn gave her a small smile and continued to marvel at the people and the lights and the sounds.
"That's what I'm going to do, when I get married, I mean. I'm going to bring whoever I marry to New York and take them to all the good places. Like the ones that not all tourists go to." Cole looked me dead in the eyes when he said "whoever I marry". I shivered under my winter coat.
"And I'm sure the girl you marry would love that." All the comments my aunt was making seemed to make her think about something.
The conversation continued to revolve around New York and what we were going to visit. Like the typical tourist places and the small diners I had always wanted to visit when I was younger.
The hotel which we were staying in was older, but still divine. With pillars and silk curtains sweeping the floor, it was what I had always imagined old New York to look like. There were gold accents all around, with deep reds in the fabrics. It made me want to wrap myself in those curtains and just stay there.
"Rosemary, our room is this way." My aunt's voice pulled me out of my thoughts. We all followed her though the hallways until we were on the fifth floor, room 512 and 513. Everyone piled into our separate rooms-Don and I in one, and Cole, Grandma, and Gracie in the other.
