Preemptive A/N: Sorry, not sorry for all the bad puns in this chapter! You have been warned!
I sat down and opened my laptop, having taken a shower and changed into pajamas. I was ready to do my nightly hours upon hours of internet browsing. I hopped onto Tumblr first, scrolling through to see whatever was new on my feed. When I'd reached the end of my new content I switched over to Facebook and saw that I had a friend request. It was from Phil. I clicked accept, thinking how it was nice to have met someone so soon after moving in.
I thought for a moment and decided to scroll through his timeline, freezing when I saw the first photo that popped up. It was a picture of him and another boy, one with brown hair and brown eyes. But it was the smile the other boy was wearing that startled me the most. He was Daniel, the boy I'd been best friends with back in primary school. And he was Phil's roommate.
I felt my face heat up as I tried to wrap my head around the fact that Daniel, the boy who'd been my first and best friend... the boy who'd given me my first kiss, was probably right above me this very moment. I looked at the ceiling, reflexively sinking further into my couch.
I turned my attention back to the picture, blushing as I realized that Daniel had only gotten more attractive with age. He looked like he'd become more outgoing as well, seeing as the photo showed him and Phil goofing around on what looked to be a stage of some sort. And they both looked so happy.
I felt a light smile grace my lips as I thought about who Daniel might be now. He was apparently still somewhat anti-social and loved Guitar Hero. The only other thing I knew for sure was that he and Phil made YouTube videos that apparently had a following.
I quickly opened another tab and went to YouTube, typing the username Phil had given to me into the search bar. I ignored the videos that popped up and went straight to his profile. The first thing that caught my eye was his subscriber count, it was at nearly four million. Almost four million people were watching his videos? It blew my mind to even try to picture that many people. I clicked play on his channel trailer and found myself being bombarded with clips of Phil, and occasionally Daniel, being goofy and giving a basic overview of the feel and content of his channel. I could see why it might be appealing.
I glanced over at the related channels and quickly found one labeled danisnotonfire. I could tell immediately from the tiny profile picture that this was Daniel's channel. I clicked and felt my breath catch as I saw his subscriber count. He had over six million subscribers. The boy who'd been so shy that teachers had paired him with me just to try to get us to interact with people at all was now making videos for over six million people. That was mad!
I found myself clicking on his channel's trailer and laughing slightly from Daniel yelling, "Sex! Okay I think I got their attention..." The rest of the video explained his channel fairly well, he was making fun of himself for people's entertainment and to help others feel not so alone in their own failures and awkward moments. It sounded like something I could've used much earlier in life. But the idea that six million people were watching these videos was mind boggling.
I quickly bookmarked the page and went back to Facebook, typing up a quick message to Phil. I'd always been more at ease when talking to people online.
I let out a mixture between a groan and laugh. I loved puns but that had been bad... and so forced. I sat for a few minutes, trying to think of how to respond to a pun that would give even me a run for my money.
I glanced at the photo of Phil and Daniel one last time before taking a deep breath and closing my laptop. I'd been on my own for less than five hours and I could already tell this was going to be interesting transition.
A/N: Just imagine whatever profile picture you want for yourself because that'll be more fun than me picking a randomly generic photo :D
