all the people
around me
always seem to
have smiles ontheirfaces
but then i get closer to them
and their once radiant
faces
and their once brilliant
smiles
are
different
their smiles are fake
stuck on like
faulty magnets to a fridge,
they're slowly

and you can see clearly now
what they are hiding
there are only frowns
and cries of despair
and anger
hidden behind those
[cheerful]
smiles
and their faces, oh their faces
their radiant faces
are anything but
they look tired
[so tired]
in the way that their
eyes no longer sparkle
and dark circles
line their eyes like smudged mascara
in the way that their breaths are heavy
because their punctured lungs
make it hard to breathe
in the way that their feet drag
because there's nothing
to pull them forward
in the way that
no amount of sleep
could ever make them
feel awake
