It's just like any other day. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and classes seem to go on forever. I sigh as I tap my pencil against my desk and look around the room. All of my friends appear to be here, except for Jimmy. Jordan waves to me from the back of the room. I sigh before turning back around in my seat. Mr. Pulley is rambling on about the Greek alphabet and whatnot. Nobody is really paying any attention. Suddenly, I feel my phone vibrate. I pull it out and read my message.
'One minute ago: Hey. Do you think you can give me some advice?'
I look back at Caroline. She smiles shyly and gestures towards Jonathan. I raise my eyebrows in surprise before responding.
'Carol you know I've never been in a relationship. I don't know anything about love.'
I press send and look back at her. She frowns before typing back furiously.
'One minute ago: Come on! Please! I really like him but I'm afraid to tell him. What should I do?'
I sigh and type back.
'Okay fine. If you really like him that much, then tell him. What's the worst thing that could happen?'
I look back at her again. She looks up and gives me a thumbs up. I give her a quick salute before turning back around. I lean back in my chair as I pick up my pencil and resume tapping it against my desk. Just then, a crudely made paper airplane flies across the room and hits Mr. Pulley in the back of his bald head. He turns around from the board and looks around the room. After finding nothing, he turns back around. I turn around and look around the room.
My eyes come to rest on Timmy and Curtis, laughing their heads off. Timmy mimics throwing a paper airplane that hits our teacher and his expression when he turns around. Curtis laughs and pats Timmy on the back. Curtis's eyes find mine briefly. His look is cold and stern. I turn back around in my seat and try to shake off a feeling of dread.
The bell rings, pulling me out of the pool of dread. The desks squeak against the floor as we all get out of our seats and rush for the door. The end of the day has finally come, the moment we've all been waiting for! As I walk out of the room into the hallway, Meliyah joins me in walking to our lockers.
"So, I'm thinking about having a party tonight, but just for all my friends. Would you wanna come?"
I smile.
"Depends on who all is going to be there."
I open my locker and set my books down inside. She does the same thing.
"Well I was only going to invite a few people. I was thinking you, Jordan, Nate, Caroline, Jonathan, Creed, Brooke, Megan, Max, Timmy, Curtis, Carmen, Alex, Issac, Adam, Ethan, and Garrett."
I look over at her.
"Gosh Meliyah. I thought you said a few people, not a whole group!"
She laughs and closes her locker.
"Sorry! So are you going to show up Bella, or is Jordan going to have to drag your ass there instead?"
I sigh and roll my eyes.
"I guess I'll be there..."
She claps and hugs me.
"...but expect me to be fashionably late."
She lets go of me and beams widely.
"Deal! See you there!"
She tosses her backpack over her shoulder and strides off happily. I sigh again before shutting my locker. I pick up my backpack and start to walk off. Not even a few feet away from my locker, I run into someone. Creed and I both fall to the ground, his glasses skidding across the floor.
"Oh! I am so sorry Creed! Are you okay?"
He chuckles as he stands up.
"Yeah. I'm fine Bella. No harm done."
I sigh in relief as he walks over and picks up his glasses.
"Oh good. I was afraid I might have hurt you or something. I wasn't paying attention and certainly didn't expect you to be standing right there..."
He cuts me off.
"Look. It's okay. You're fine and I'm fine, so what's the big deal?"
I don't respond. He shakes his head.
"Anyway, are you going to Meliyah's party tonight? If you are and need a ride, I would be more than happy to take you."
I look down as my cheeks turn a light pink.
"Yeah...I mean, I'm going, but I'm pretty sure I won't need a ride. Thanks anyway Creed."
He smiles at me. "No problem. It's the least I could do. So I'll see you then?"
"Definitely."
"Cool..."
He starts to walk off but stops and waves at me.
"See you there! Bye!"
I wave back.
"Bye Creed!"
After he leaves, a rambunctious Jordan jumps in my back, almost knocking me over.
"Are you going to the party? Did Creed ask you to go with him yet? Did Meliyah ever say what time it was at?"
I giggle as she gets off and comes around to face me.
"Woah Jordan! Hold your horses! Yes I'm going but not with Creed, and she never mentioned when we have to be there."
Jordan paces around in front of me.
"Then what did Creed ask you after you ran into him?"
I sigh.
"He just asked if I was okay....wait a minute! Were you spying on us?"
She stands up straighter and holds her hands behind her back. She begins to whistle as I glare at her.
"No! Not at all! I just...happened to be standing a few feet away from you guys..."
I shake my head.
"Jordan! I thought I told you this!"
She pretends to pout as she grabs my hands and flails my arms around.
"Oh come on Bella! Everybody can tell that he likes you! Even Nate has asked me why you weren't with him yet!"
I roll my eyes and pull my hands out of hers.
"Wow. You and Nate must be so desperate to get rid of me..."
"Hey! Nate and I love you...well, most of the time."
She smiles at me as the dismissal bell rings. I toss my backpack on to my shoulder.
"I've got to run. See you at the party tonight Jordan."
I wave as I walk out of the school and head for my car. It beeps as I unlock it and get in. I shut the door before pulling down my overhead mirror. A piece of paper flutters down on to my lap. I pick it up and flip the little square over. On the other side is a picture of all of my friends at my seventh birthday party. Everyone is smiling and wearing party hats. A banner that says "Happy Birthday" hangs over our heads. On my right is Creed and on my left is Jordan. Both of them have their arms wrapped around my shoulder.
Everything looks so happy and cheery. I smile, reminiscing about that day. Very soon everything I thought I knew would change, and my world would never be the same again.
