Anyone could say Tanya and Remus were basically a match made in heaven and that the two would be a perfect couple but unfortunately both had things that stopped them from becoming too close to people, in fear of hurting them or being hurt. It was quite tragic really, especially when very few people knew the darkest, deepest secrets that resided deep inside their hearts and minds, secrets that could almost tear apart their worlds in an instant. Most 'normal' people would back away in terror, and try their very best to avoid the two if they did find out about their darkest secrets. It wasn't exactly normal to be transformed into a monster once a month, when a bright, beautiful full moon rose into the sky. It wasn't exactly normal to have a very dangerous group of people out to get you and the one piece of family you have left.
You see the people who were out to kill Tanya were very much perfectionists, and hated to leave a job unfinished. So after her parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents, cousins, almost every single member of family she had were all completely eliminated, leaving almost no trace that they had ever existed, there were only two people left: Tanya and her younger sister, both of which lived with a foster family. Sure they were grateful that such lovely people were happy to take care of them, but a lot of the time the lovely people just reminded the two of the family they lacked. And Tanya just feared that when her little sister came to Hogwarts the little one would just be in even more danger. It tore Tanya apart when she thought of the one piece of family she had left being in even more danger than they were already. The young girl, soon to be 11 years old, was the most precious thing in Tanya's life, she was the apple of her eye, the treasured gem that she would protect with her life...
It was the 14 year old named Tanya's birthday the next day and then she'd be the average age for a 5th year. Unlike most people the thought of her birthday sickened her, it was less of a day to signify another year lived and more of a day to torment her that her parents were dead after another year. But like every other year she took a deep breath and put on the now very believable fake smile that she'd worked on year after year.
The day passed without any particularly unusual events, except for a prank pulled on the Slytherin common room that her and Remus may or may not have been a part of and still escaped without the detention that Sirius, James and Peter all got. And before she knew it Tanya was brushing her teeth and pulling her duvet over herself, flicking on her fairy lights when the main light was diminished completely. But despite how fast the day went that night was the complete opposite, it passed almost agonizingly slowly probably due to how her mind would just not stop racing, bouncing from one anxious thought to another. If she was incredibly lucky she may have gotten a couple of hours sleep but she'd given up checking the time at around midnight.
However eventually it was morning and with nervous eyes, lips being bitten by the dozen and eyes rimmed with dark purple from lack of sleep, it was only natural for friends to be rather worried but she wasn't exactly willing to answer all their questions. She especially regretted telling them about when her birthday was previously.
"Tanya come on, you know you can tell us anything" Sirius continued to press her for answers.
"I know, I just have noting to tell you at the moment because I'm fine!" She replies, the volume in her voice rising as she spoke. It still remained too quiet to attract too much attention however.
Sirius's mouth opens as if to retort something back to her but is closed when Remus shakes his head at him, knowing they were pushing her to the breaking point and he knew it was an extremely bad idea to do that. Taking a deep breath Tanya sighs under her breath but then grins at them widely. "See I'm fine, I better be off to my first lesson though, see you all around!" She gets up from the Gryfinndor table.
"But I'm sure we have our first lesson toget-" Remus's words were cut off as she walked off, turning to wave at them when she reached the doors of the hall. After leaving Remus starts getting up but James pulls him back down, "Just give her a bit of time alone, we'll catch up to her eventually" He smiles sympathetically at his best friend.
As she walks to her first class a long sigh escapes her lips, "Why couldn't you just tell them?" she mutters to herself under her breath. She knew why though, just didn't want accept it. Once at the transfiguration classroom she found a desk at the far corner and got the book she was reading out. It was rather large so she found it hid her face quite well. If she was honest she really didn't want to be found by her friends. However luck was never on her side and soon she heard the door open and the voices of the marauders filled her ears. She then heard the voices stop suddenly as their eyes fell on the girl. And she was soon surrounded by the inquires of her well-being, "God you really are persistent aren't you?"Tanya mutters under her breath as she's asked for what to her must be the billionth time. But the fake grin makes its way onto her face once again, "Yup, I'm sure I'm fine" she says.
The day of lessons had ended and she was soon faced with the glorious feast that lay itself before them everyday. Surprisingly Remus had appeared to loose his appetite, and he bit the inside of mouth nervously.
"Go on, for goodness sake Remeus it's just a birthday present " James whispers in exasperation, only loud enough for Remus to hear. And a few minutes after he turned to Tanya, who was sitting beside him staying quieter than usual, and shoved a package into her hands. "Happy Birthday" he smiled gently at her and a small blush dusted his cheeks as a real grin formed on her face as she unwrapped the purple wrapping paper to reveal a thick book, with the title 'The Lord of the Rings'.
"Thank you so much!" she exclaims, wrapping her arms round him joyfully.
"I hope you haven't read it yet" His cheeks a bright pink colour as he chuckles slightly.
"Surprisingly, no it sounds amazing though!" She says, her cheeks a pink colour as well as her eyes scanned the blurb of the book.
And that was how Tanya went to sleep that night with a genuine smile on her features, despite the fact that it was the birthday of hers that she dreaded all year round.
