Family Matters
Amber's POV
I anxiously knocked on Scott's front door. I waited patiently as the door was unlocked. The door swung open and Ms. McCall stood to greet me. I timidly smiled as to say 'hi' and she nodded.
"Um...Is Scott home?" I asked nervously messing with the sleeves of my shirt. "I need to talk to him."
I felt my stomach drop as a look of realization formed on Ms. McCalls face. She grinned sympathetically which oddly caused my eyes to water and throat burn. I clenched my jaw, holding back the tears.
"He's up in his room." She said, kindly stepping aside for me to walk in.
"Thank you." I said with a warm, but forced smile.
"No problem." She said before I began up the stairs. As I approached Scott's room I stopped at his door feeling light headed, I took in a sporadic breath, realizing I had held it all the way up the stairs. I whipped the tears from below my eyes and shook my head before gathering up all my mental strength to knock on the door.
"Ohh, son of a - Not now, mom." Scott spat, making me laugh. I opened my mouth to say something but quickly decided to just open the door and walk in.
"I said not now-" Scott said turning around and freezing once he saw me. I watched as he moved his eyes up and down my body, reading me. He paused and turned his head slightly, listening to my rapid heart beat.
"Sorry. Your mom let me in. " I muttered, my voice sounding strange as I tried to keep it from cracking. Scott stood still with a blank look upon his face, but by the increasing heart rate I heard in my ear, I knew he was suspicious.
"What's wrong?" He asked, stepping forward towards me hesitantly.
"Can we talk?"
The both of us walked over and sat at the end of his bed. Once I was situated I looked to Scott.
"So...I don't really know what to say." I laughed. Scott smiled and looked to the floor.
"I wouldn't either."
"I guess I just want you to know that I'm not on my dads side of this. I'm not gonna help him manipulate you, but..." I stopped, not wanting to finish my thought.
Scott nodded, letting me know it was okay to say what I need to say.
"...I dont think I can help you either." My stomach dropped as the words escaped my lips. "He's my dad and if you have plans to hurt him, I can't be a part of that."
"I get it, Amber, trust me." Scott said scooting closer towards me, grabbing my hand. His skin was warm unlike mine which was icy and raw.
"Thanks...for understanding." I said, looking up into his face which was merely inches away from mine.
"Hey, Scott..." Ms. McCall yelled from the hallway, causing us to jump. Scott and I stood so that she wouldn't get suspicious. "I'm coming home late tonight - what?" She said walking into his room dressed amazingly. I stared wide eyed with my jaw dropped.
"What - what's wrong? Is it - is it my hair, makeup?" She asked, scrunching her nose.
"No. No, nothing." Scott said with a silly smile. "You look beautiful."
"You look amazing." I chimed in.
"Amazing. Why do you look amazing?" Scott asked furrowing his brows.
"Because, amazingly, I'm having dinner for once with a member of the male gender who's over the age of 16."
I laughed but Scott kept a serious face.
"Who?"
"Uh, it's a medical rep that came into the hospital, today. " He explained. "Yeah, we just kinda started talking, and the next thing I know, I'm saying yes to dinner and - I'm really hating myself for skipping the gym last week."
"Dont worry Ms. McCall, any guy would be honored to go on a date with you."
"Aw, thank you Amber." She said, messing with her hair.
"What - medical rep?" Scott said, still hung up on the fact that his mother was about to go on a date. Just as Ms. McCall was going to say anything, the door bell rang.
"That medical rep. And, uh, I'm not - I'm not ready. I'm not ready. I'm not done, I'm not ready, so if you could please just get the - get the door and talk with him, okay, just - Be nice. " She said quickly before running back to her room to finish.
"I'll be right back." Scott told me as he walked out of his room to answer the door.
"Just one minute, okay?" Scott called.
Many silent moments passed and the sound of the door opening ceased. Confused I walked towards the window to see if the man was still waiting at the door.
"Scott! Get the door." Ms. McCall shouted.
I moved Scott's curtains to the side and glanced down at the front door. My stomach dropped when I saw that the man at the door was my dad. I dropped the curtain and sprinted out of his room. "Scott!" I shouted as I ran down the stairs. When I reached the front door, I saw that Scott already know why I was calling him. I froze as my dad looked to me from the doorway.
"Hello there." He stated, a sinister smile slapped across his face. Scott grabbed the door and tried to slam it shut but he caught it and pushed it back.
"Really? Slam the door in my face? Come on, Scott. Take a second to think that through."
"I'll tell her." Scott threatened.
"That I used to be a catatonic invalid with burns covering half my face?" He laughed. "Good luck with that."
I could feel Scott's anger rise. I stepped forward and placed a hand on his arm to calm him.
"If you hurt her, if you even touch her -"
"Scott, if I may interrupt your listing of the top five most impotent - sounding threats for a moment, try and remember that I've been in a coma for six years. Don't you think I'd like to have dinner with a beautiful woman?"
Just then, Ms. McCall walked by and stopped beside Scott.
"Just - just half a second. Sorry." She said before quickly walking away.
"Or maybe - " He continued. "You think that I've come up with an idea. Like how it might be easier to convince you to be part of the pack - if your mother is too. "
"Dad!" I spat, but he paid little attention.
"You need to understand how much more powerful we are together - You and me and Derek. Did you know that some of the most successful military operations during the second world war were the German U - boat attacks? Do you know what they called them? Wolf packs. Did you know that? Or are you failing history as well?"
"I know the Germans lost the war." Scott scoffed.
"I think you'll find that most historians would argue that as a failure of leadership. And trust me, we don't have that problem here."
The two glared at each other while stood, unsure what to do. I was conflicted. I knew which side was right but how could I betray my dad.
"I'm ready, I'm ready. Sorry again." Ms. McCall's voice surprised me and caused me to jump. As Ms. McCall walked towards my dad, I slid my hand into Scott's and help it tight so that he wouldn't try and do anything he would regret.
"Mom -" Scott spoke up.
"Yes? Sweetheart?"
I looked to Scott looked like he was going to say something and prepared for chaos.
"Have a good time." He said, taking me fore surprise. I smiled and Ms. McCall and waved as the two walked off.
