"So if you want to be like Daddy, you have to dress as a monster for Halloween." This is the thing I hear as I walk in the door, coming home from work. Obviously this pisses me off more than a little.
"IZAYA!"
"Speak of the devil," Izaya says smiling, then he turns to Zenko. "Don't be a devil for Halloween. A monster is a better choice."
"I. Am. Not. A. Monster." I growl.
My husband smiles at me innocently. "Did I say anything about you being a monster. I simply encouraged our son to be a monster because you would like it. I mean, Halloween is supposed to be scary, just like you."
"Well if that's the case," I give him and "evil smile. "Zenko, I think you should be a dog and make dog sounds."
He glares at me, but tries not to give anything away. "That wouldn't be a good choice. Dogs are so adorable." The word is filled with disgust but he continues on. "The neighbors would try to molest him."
"Papa, what does molest mean?"
"To bother. The neighbors would try to bother you, Zenko," he says without hesitation. Although he drives me crazy sometimes, I'm lucky he has good explanations because mine always suck.
"And Daddy, why would I dress up as I dog if I had to be scary?"
"Because Papa-" I don't get to finish. Izaya jumps into my arms and presses his lips against mine. He holds this position for a few seconds then lets go.
"Ew," Zenko complains.
"If you think that's gross," Izaya says, then presses his lips against mine again. But this time he sticks his tongue in my mouth. I instantly push him away, but he makes sure to leave a trail of saliva.
I use the back of my hand to wipe the spit off and glare at Izaya. "Do I need to talk to you in private?"
"Are you going to punish me?" He asks seductively.
I open my mouth to say something, but Zenko shoves himself between us, although he only comes to about our hip level. "Don't punish Papa because he pulled a prank on you!" I think I fear the day he becomes corrupt.
Izaya squats down to Zenko's height. "I'm glad you understand me. Daddy is really means sometimes."
"He might be, but you shouldn't prank him. He's old and can only take so much," he scolds him.
I start to laugh because he scolded Izaya, but then I realize what he said after that. "Hey! How old do you think I am?"
"Older than Papa," he tells me with a straight face.
"Only by a few months!"
"Really? Papa always tells me he's a child at heart, so I thought that meant you were a lot older than him," he tells me.
"What are you teaching him while I'm gone?" I ask Izaya
"I'm not telling him anything. Maybe it's the damned schooling systems."
"Sure," I say sarcastically.
"Stop being so skeptical, Gramps," he smiles at me.
"If I was your grandpa I wouldn't have se-!" Shit. That was close.
"What was that, dear?" He asks sweetly, to cover up the venom in his tone.
"Daddy, what's se?" Zenko asks.
"I was going to say I wouldn't have said yes to the marriage," I say. For once I can actually come up with a good cover up for my mistakes.
"But my teacher told me you two weren't really married," Zenko says, confused.
"Well that's because men can't get married to other men in Japan," I tell him.
"But why not? You two are so happy together! My teacher told me that it's gross when girls date girls and boys date boys."
"Well don't listen to her," Izaya tells her. "Only listen to the facts. Don't listen to any of her opinions because they're probably as narrow-minded as she is."
"I told her that she was wrong because you treat me better than some of the parents of other kids in my class. I know that you love each other and me."
"That's good and all, Zenko," I tell him, "But you shouldn't talk back to a teacher. Even if she is wrong. Okay?"
He nods. "I won't do it again."
"You can always tell us if she upsets you, though," Izaya tells him. "We can go in and talk to her to keep her mouth shut or report her to the higher-ups of the school."
"Wait, did you get in trouble for this?" I ask our son.
He shakes his head. "No, she said that she was sure you were good people."
"Well, I wouldn't say that. Papa is a terrible person," I point out.
"I am not. Do I beat people up and hurt them beyond belief?"
"No, but you make other people do it for you," I argue.
"Not necessarily. Other people get provoked by things I say and others get hurt in the process. I just happen to be there to watch. Also, I have stopped multiple people from giving up their lives in suicide attempts."
"Really?" I ask skeptically.
"Yes," he says. "Maybe you should learn more about your husband."
"So, if I asked Namie, she'd agree?"
"She would, because it's true."
"Then I'll ask her later."
"Papa, Daddy," Zenko says. "I still need a costume for school."
"Why?" I ask. I don't remember ever dressing up at school.
He looks at Izaya for help. Even though he doesn't see the cue, he can tell. "All of the teachers at the school thought it would be a good idea to dress up. They're learning about some of the powerhouse countries, so they figured that, since Halloween is a big part of culture among the children in America, the students should all have an experience similar to that of American children. I think they're going to do Russia next."
"Okay...?" I'm still not really sure what the whole point is, but Izaya understands so that's all that matters.
"Halloween is the end of learning about the United States of America, so the teachers wanted to end it with something fun," Zenko tells me. Oddly enough, that makes more sense than what Izaya said. "And you never told me why I should dress up as a dog."
"Well, if it's for school, it's more appropriate than something scary," I tell him.
"Okay, I'll be a dog!" He chirps.
"NO," Izaya intervenes. "If you want to be an animal, be something like a cat or a cow. Daddy has a cat fetish, so that's your best option." I shake my head at Izaya. He never lets anything go.
"What does fetish mean?"
"It means he really likes cats," Izaya tells him.
Zenko's face lightens up. "Then we can all be cats!"
"I don't know about that. Daddy and I are too old to dress up."
"Please?" He turns to me. "Daddy?"
"If you want, but we won't be going out or anything."
"That's okay," he smiles. "We can be cats together at home."
