“We can’t hold them down any longer!” One of the guards shouted in Ellie’s direction.

“We don’t need to hold them down, we need to get rid of them!” Ellie replied as she barely avoided being bitten by one of the zombies.

Suddenly, a loud glass shatter was heard and the zombies started moving towards the area where the sound had been produced.

Nathan changed back into his human form and joined Ellie. “What the hell was that?” he asked.

“I don’t know…” Ellie replied as she tried to catch her breath.

There were zombies flying out in the air as something approached them.

“I want everybody to ready their weapons and prepare for whatever’s coming!” Ellie ordered the guards that were now surrounding her.

In just a few seconds, a silhouette could be seen and everybody was pointing their weapons at it.

Ellie widened her eyes in realization as she recognized who it was.

“Hold the fire, everyone!” Ellie shouted and all the guards stopped pointing towards whatever was nearing them.

All of a sudden, they could start seeing a more defined form emerging from the mass of zombies.

“Julie?!” Nathan suddenly blurted out.

As soon as Julie got out of the herd of zombies, she ran past Ellie, Nathan and the guardians, while shouting, “What are you waiting for? RUN!”, right before entering one of the vans.

Everyone suddenly realized that the zombies were effectively now following Julie and that they were in their path, so everyone ran to the vans, ignited the engines and took a dash for it.

Nathan and Ellie got in the same van as Julie, ready to interrogate her.

“Please, let’s just get out of here first and then we can talk about whatever you want to?” Julie pleaded right when she sensed they were going to ask her about her whereabouts.

The trip back to the Fortress was awkward since no one dared to ask anything, but everybody knew that questions were going to be imminent once they got back.

Once they left the vans at the parking lot, and they got through the door not once saying a word, Nathan, not being able to contain himself anymore, asked Julie, “Why aren’t your eyes green anymore?”

Ellie stopped walking as did Julie, both tense.

“It’s obvious, isn’t it?” Ellie hissed.

Nathan tensed up at this answer and at Julie’s silence.

“Julie, please tell me you aren’t a…” Nathan started, but got cut off by Ellie, who just continued in a pissed off tone, “A vampire? Nathan, please, you’re not stupid, we both know how to recognize one when we see it.”

Julie kept silent the whole time not knowing how to explain what had happened.

A few seconds passed by.

“Are you going to talk?” Ellie demanded Julie.

Julie sighed. “Sorry.”

“A “sorry” won’t help you out when the Council sees you.” Ellie hissed at Julie.

“I know, and I should’ve told you right when I ran past you, but it’s just that…” Julie tried explaining but failed miserably.

“How do you expect us to help you out when we don’t even know why you did it?” Nathan muttered, sorrow audible in his voice.
