(Scene: The Archer's living room)

(Characters onstage: Narrator, Lola Archer and Mr Archer)

(Mr Archer is making a stake)

Narrator: After being home for a while, Lola has finally got enough courage to ask her dad if he will let her go to the party.

Lola Archer: Dad... you know how it's the end of school party soon?

Mr Archer: Yeah? What about it?

(Lola Archer sighs)

Lola Archer: I really want to go dad! It's what everyone else in high school does!

Mr Archer: No! No way! I will not let you go to some posh school party!

Lola Archer: DAD! EVERYONE GOES TO THE END OF YEAR PARTYS OR PROMS! WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO MISS OUT?!

Mr Archer: We are not like everyone else Lola! We are different! WE ARE SLAYERS! WE PROTECT THE PEOPLE FROM THE FORCES OF THE UNDEAD. WE PROTECT THOSE THAT CANNOT PROTECT THEMSELVES! THAT IS OUR DUTY LOLA! THAT IS WHAT WE ARE MEANT TO DO! I WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO BELIEVE YOU CAN BECOME A NORMAL TEENAGER BY TAKING SOME GUY YOU HARDLY KNOW TO THE PARTY!

Lola Archer: THIS HASN'T GOT ANYTHING TO DO WITH SLAYING! YOU'RE JUST WORRIED ABOUT WHO I'M TAKING TO THE PARTY! WELL I'M TAKING NO ONE! NO ONE AT ALL SO I HOPE YOU REALISE THAT I'M NOT TAKING SOME GUY I DON'T KNOW! I JUST WANT TO BE A NORMAL GIRL BEFORE I AM FORCED TO ROAM THE STREETS AT NIGHT LOOKING FOR CREATURES THAT DON'T EVEN EXIST!

(Mr Archer sighs)

Mr Archer: Enough Lola! If you don't behave yourself I will not even consider letting you go to the party! However, if you behave, I will let you go ALONE to the party and I will drive you there. Deal?

Lola Archer: Fine, if it means I can go

Mr Archer: I just want to protect you, you're my only daughter, the only family I have left, I don't want you to die like your mother did. I don't want the forces of the undead sinking their teeth into you, killing you or making you one of them. That would truly be a living hell, knowing that I couldn't protect my own daughter from the forces of evil just like I couldn't save your dear, sweet mother.

(Mr Archer hugs Lola Archer)

Lola Archer: Dad, you just don't get it, vampires are fictional characters, they aren't real! You don't need to protect me from an evil that doesn't exist dad. I'll go to the dance and I will be fine, I'll go and have a good time then I will come home and hug you.

Mr Archer: I trust you... just I don't want to lose you Lola, you're irreplaceable to me... I love you too much to see a great evil killing you or enchanting you, making you believe vampires are safe when sweetheart, they aren't safe at all. I just want and need you to be careful...

Lola Archer: I will be dad, I will be on the look out for anything with fangs. I promise just... just... don't worry about me, I will be ok... just make sure you don't worry about me too much, you know how much I hate you worrying. Mum died due to a car accident so I will avoid the cars if it makes you happy.

Mr Archer: My daughter is all grown up and soon she will be starting college! I hope you get lots of offers and take the ones you think are best but I do hope you'll consider working in the family business, working as one of us, working as a slayer...

Lola Archer: I'll consider it Dad, now I have to find a dress to wear

Mr Archer: How much do you need?

Lola Archer: I'll save your money and look in my wardrobe...

(Mr Archer hands Lola Archer £50)

Mr Archer: No you will not, you will go out and buy an outfit so you look extra special at the party!

Lola Archer: THANKS DAD!

(Exit Lola Archer - Stage Left)

Mr Archer: I worry about that girl... She reminds me of her mother all those years ago, she was smart and head-strong too and I doubt she would believe in vampires either. I had to lie to Lola and tell her that her mother died in a car crash... She died after a vampire made her his night snack... they don't care who you are as long as you have blood pumping in your veins
