During the flight Sloane had already guessed that Silver had a hand in the attack. She also suspected that he was the one that had left the note. But she did not want to jump into any conclusions. Richard wasn't even helping matters. When she told him about the note he only laughed and said, "The guy is trying to scare you."
In a few hours later they were landing in a clearing not far from the weapon store. From what they saw trees were burnt and some cars were abandoned and burnt along the road. But there were no casualties. Allen was going to take some people and headed to stores that weren't hurt which were further away to ask them what they saw while Sloane and Richard would take the rest of team to comb through the rest of the place. But as they were about to descend, the pilot informed them,
"Wait a minute, this is odd, our system is sensing heat waves from an unknown direction."
"That can't be right" Allen said while he went over to look at the grid laid out on the motherboard
"But there is no sign of -"
Allen was cut off by an explosion the occurred inches away from the jet and the whole place shook. The impact was so strong that he jet almost turned over. When they were sure the explosion had stopped. Sloane spoke up, "Well that was nice, he knew we were coming, whoever it is."
She made to get down from the jet but Richard pulled her arm,
"It's too dangerous. We don't know if there are any more explosives. You better stay here."
"Well we are not getting any answers by staying here either." She replied her eyes challenging him to say otherwise. She felt so soft under his hands, different thoughts ran through his mind he wanted to pull her close against him even though she would squirm. He wouldn't mind. But instead he let her go and said, "We are right behind you."
Allen and his group proceeded to the other stores while Sloane and her group did a thorough search on the site.
"Looks like we are dealing with nuclear weapons." Richard said closely examining the unusual charred remains of a stone. After moments of searching endlessly Richard said "Well there's nothing else here."
But Sloane shouted from where she was sifting through dirt. "I found something! I think it's a chip." She held up the chip for Richard to see. Then she put it inside a plastic bag. "Let's see if Astrid can get something from it."
Richard nodded and right then Allen and his group were heading back towards them. "Any luck?" Richard asked him.
"Yeah. You might want to take a look." He showed them a video from his phone. It was a video of something that looked like a giant jet shooting rounds of bullets.
"What is that?" Sloane asked.
"It's a battle drone. Designed solely for wars and other attacks. Somebody got a video of it in action. But I don't know why one should be out here."
"Probably tired of staying indoors" Richard joked. Sloane rolled her eyes. "We better head back it's already late." She said.
Allen agreed. They all piled back into the jet and headed back to the pentagon. Sloane handed the chip to Allen to take a look at it before she gave it to Astrid. It was already late so immediately they landed they went home. The result of the note was already waiting for her with Jane. She said Astrid dropped it off a while ago. Sloane took the manila envelope from Jane and went through its content in her office. But just as she had expected they couldn't find a single finger print except the ones that were hers. She was disappointed but kept the file anyways in her drawer along with the chip also. It was already past seven and she was really tired. She locked up and she was leaving she bumped into Richard.
"Fancy meeting you here" he said.
"Well of course. We work here together don't we?" Sloane replied with a little irritation in her voice. A corner of Richard's mouth curled up and a dimple peeked out. He seemed to be staring at her, watching her you might say. He stretched out a hand and played with one of her curls, they felt so soft. Then he asked, "Have dinner with me will you?"
Sloane chose her words carefully, "Probably, not this night obviously"
"Wonderful. I'll be looking forward to it." Then he let go of her hair and made his way to his car. She just looked at him and shook her head. She really needed to rest.
