"Promise me you'll remember, you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think" - Winnie the Pooh
"Mrs. Stone is 6 months pregnant, fetus in fetu. In general terms, the baby inside of the patient has her twin inside of her. Tomorrow, she will be undergoing surgery to transplant the baby outside of the larger baby. All stats are currently good" Dr. Karev presented, while Dr. Beauregard stood at the foot of the patient. The patient, Mrs. Stone was there with her husband as well as Dr. Webber, Dr. Bailey, Dr. Robbins and a bunch of other interns and residents watching, eager to learn.
"Good. Thank you Dr. Now Mrs. Stone, how are you feeling today? I've heard you've come a long way for this" Dr. Beauregard said, as she felt the woman's belly for any abnormalities.
"Good, better that you're here. They say you're the best" Mrs. Stone said, sounding a bit relieved. Her husband put a comforting hand on her shoulder.
Dr. Beauregard gave a soft smile to the couple.
"Well, thank you. You're in good hands. I've done this before. Your babies will come out perfectly fine. Let me finish running some tests and I will see you soon. Any food that you two would like?" She asked.
"A burger? They don't seem to have it at the cafeteria?... Oh I'm sorry! I didn't mean to..." Mrs. Stone blurted, and then tried to retract it. Sapphire just laughed, as she finished the quick examination.
"Oh I'll make sure you get one. I'm a bit hungry myself actually" Dr. Beauregard said, before leaving the room with the other doctors following her.
She stood outside, as the rest of the doctor's crowded around her, waiting for something. Dr. Beauregard finished her notes, and looked up at the group, expectantly.
"Wow, sorry I was not able to introduce myself before but I am Miranda Bailey. It is an honor to meet you" Dr. Bailey said shaking the Dr's hand enthusiastically. Dr. Beauregard smiled.
"It's a pleasure. You have quite the reputation yourself, Dr. Bailey. You've done great work" She said, and Dr. Bailey's pride went through the roof.
"Well, this is a teaching hospital, Dr. Beauregard. You can pick two or three interns or new residents to help you with this case" Dr. Webber said, and Dr. Beauregard looked at the faces.
"Dr. Yang and Dr. Karev" Dr. Beauregard stated, before turning around and walking towards to the nurses station to give back the paperwork. Dr. Yang and Dr. Karev followed her.
"Hello, I'm going to need the best of you two for tomorrow's surgery. Now, read up all that you can, and make sure you get all the rest that you can. It's going to be an intense and long surgery and I don't need to worry about anyone else besides that mom and her babies. Got it? Now keep me updated. I'll be getting that burger" Dr. Beauregard said, sternly but with a hint of sweet. Karev and Yang nodded enthusiastically, and she turned around promptly.
Dr. Beauregard was staring at her phone for burger places when she bumped into someone.
"Oh my, sorry I wasn't watching where I was going. You're... you're Dr. Sapphire Beauregard. Oh my gosh, it's such a pleasure to meet you. I'm Dr. Jackson Avery" Dr. Avery apologized, picking up some papers he dropped.
"It's a pleasure to meet you as well. How're you doing?" Dr. Beauregard asked, noticing his sparkling green eyes.
"Good, just about to get lunch. You?" he asked, a bit nervous. This was the Dr. Sapphire Beauregard. She was like The Ellis Grey of our time, even better.
"I was actually going to get a burger for myself and my patient. Do you know where I could get a good burger? You're welcome to come of course."She said, giving him a soft smile, putting him more at ease. Dr. Avery was definitely a pretty boy, Sapphire thought.
"Of course, theres one right down the street" Dr.Avery said, as she followed him out to the restaurant.
"What do you like to do, Dr. Beauregard?" Dr. Avery asked, as they sat down at the burger restaurant.
"Besides work, I like hiking and exploring. Cooking too, but I'm on the road so much that's pretty hard to do that. And please, just call me Sapphire now that we're not in the hospital" She said, and Jackson smiled widely.
"I love doing that too. There's some really cool trails around here. Dr. Shepherd would probably know better. He's the head of Neuro here, but he lives in a trailer in the woods" Jackson said, and Sapphire's heart stuttered for a bit.
"Dr. Shepherd, as in Dr. Derek Shepherd?" She asked trying not to seem so surprised and shocked.
"Yea, he's head of Neuro. He's done a lot of amazing work here" Jackson commented, as the waitress placed their burgers down.
Jackson chuckled a bit, watching Sapphire as she took a large bite into her burger.
"Hey, I like burgers..." She said, blushing a bit. Jackson just smiled larger.
"Oh I'm not laughing at you. You're just... you're this beautiful woman chomping on a greasy big messy burger. It's refreshing" Jackson said, trying to not be more embarrassed. Sapphire smiled, as she wiped off some of the mess on her face.
"Oh, well thank you. You're pretty handsome yourself, if I do say so" Sapphire replied, as they continued eating. Jackson could only smile, as he sat eating burgers with the smartest, most beautiful woman he's ever seen.
Derek's POV
I didn't know how to go see her.
I knew that I would have to eventually, but how. How could I talk to the woman that has basically haunted me for years. Every time I read her name in the paper, I freeze, and flip the page.
Sapphire and I were supposed to be married and have brilliant kids. She was my first crush, first love, first.... everything.
... and then she left. Sapphire was accepted to Harvard, and left. She left messages saying she wanted to 'remain friends' but how could I when I was so in love with her.
I didn't know how I was going to feel seeing her again.
I missed everything about her: her smile, her laugh, her enthusiasm over everything, her dedication and loyalty. Just Sapphire.
But then there was Meredith, who took my breath away when I first met her. She made me forget about Sapphire. It wasn't like Addison who was so similar to Sapphire, but Meredith made me forget about Sapphire by being herself. Meredith was dark and twisty, and my better half.
I turned a corner in the hospital and heard her voice, well her laughter.
"Oh that's hysterical. Thank you Jackson" Sapphire said, as Jackson smiled at her.
"Well I'll let you get back to your patient. Call me sometime?" He asked, and she just smiled and nodded. Sapphire headed my direction, as I put my head down and went to a nurses station to seem busy.
I watched out of the corner of my eye as she saw me, and just walked right by. Not another glance.
I guess I hurt her as well.
