"You're doing what?!" Meredith exclaimed, as Derek tried to calmly talk to her.
He went over to her house, by himself, to tell her. Sapphire was accepting the job at Seattle Grace so he had some time, and Sapphire understood he had to talk to Meredith.
"I'm going with Sapphire to Boston to help her move here. We're getting back together. I'm sorry. I thought...I don't know how to explain without this without hurting you. Sapphire's the love of my life; always has been and always will be. I tried. I tried not to fall back in love with her when she came back because I had you, but.. I never fell out of love with Sapphire" Derek explained, with a heavy heart.

Derek felt bad. Of course he cared for Meredith, but even having her right in front of him now, Derek knew that she could never compare to Sapphire. Meredith would never be enough as long as Sapphire was there.

Meredith just sat there, feeling her heart crush again. It was worse than when Addison came. She actually had a shot with Derek when Addison came back. There was still love in Derek's eyes for her with Addison.
Now, there was nothing. Not even a glimmer of hope it seemed. Sapphire came in and swooped Derek in a mist of love, and there was none left for Meredith.
Meredith felt it the day Sapphire arrived, how nothing would be the same.

Her heart was aching.

"You're with her now" she stated, processing.
"We're working on it. I know this sounds bad but I want us to remain friends. We work together" Derek said, sighing. Meredith nodded, as she felt the finality of the situation.
"Okay. I will see you when you get back" she said, as Derek nodded and left.
Derek knew she had her own coping style, which required him to leave.

"He did what?!" Mark said, shocked, when Callie told him that Derek broke up with Meredith to be with Sapphire.
"Yea, he's going to the airport now to go with Sapphire to finish things in Boston and help her move here. No offense, but I'm glad she's coming here though" Callie said, treading lightly because of his feelings for Sapphire.
"I guess. It's going to suck, seeing them together, but at least she's here" Mark said, as they watched everyone incredibly excited that Sapphire Beauregard was going to work here.

"Wow you weren't kidding about not having food in the fridge" Derek said as they arrived at Sapphires apartment. She laughed, and nodded.
"I rarely have time to cook: when I'm here in always at the hospital, or I'm traveling for procedures" Sapphire explained, unloading her bags into the laundry and organizing the rest of her apartment so Derek would be comfortable.

"Well I'm hungry. Where's a good place for food?" He asked, as he unpacked his things.
"What are you in the mood for?" She asked, looking through the drawer of take out menus.
"Besides you? Uhmm pizza" he says, kissing her lips. She smiled, before picking up the phone and ordering.

A few hours later, Derek and Sapphire ended up drinking wine on the couch snuggling in front of the fireplace and watching TV.
"I like this" Derek said, as Sapphire curled into his side some more.
"Me too" she replied, as he pushed a strand of hair from her face.
"Being with you is like breathing: natural and necessary" Derek said, before kissing her passionately.
Sapphire put down her wineglass, her lips still attached to his, while he repositioned himself on top of her as they lay on the couch. She wrapped her legs around his waist, which caused him to lift her up and take her to the bedroom.
