Life is unpredictable.
It changes with the seasons,
Even your coldest winter,
Happens for the best of reasons,
And though it feels eternal,
Like all you'll ever do is freeze,
I promise spring is coming,
And with it, brand new leaves.
- e.hHer hair was oily and thin. Her face was pale and lackluster. Her lips were cracked and dry. The hospital gown and blankets seemed to dull her appearance even more so.
Mark sat at the side of her bed, looking at Sapphire and wishing for her to just open those beautiful bright blue eyes of hers, or open her mouth and say some sarcastic comment...anything for her to wake up."Just please wake up," Mark whispered to her, for the fiftieth time it had seemed today. He was desperate, wanting to do anything to get her to wake up.
It's been a few hours since the surgery, and Sapphire had yet to wake up. Derek was currently on a plane back and so were her parents. Derek had called and texted as much as he physically could to Mark and everyone else at the hospital.
Everyone on staff was nervous:
Webber was checking the charts every few hours and asking everyone if Sapphire had woken up yet.
Owen had spent some time with Mark sitting in the room waiting for her to wake up, even telling Sloan how they had been introduced. Mark had laughed slightly at this, knowing that encounter was basically every encounter for Sapphire.
Christina stopped by, checking in. Although she was Meredith's BFF, Dr. Beauregard was the best in her field. She was a legend.
"Hey, Meredith says you're not changing into something clean and dry? You stink, Sloan. I'll wait here while you change into this" Callie said, startling him from the door.
"I can't. I won't leave until she's up" Mark said, taking his eyes for once off of Sapphire and to his best friend.
"Yes, you can. You're not her boyfriend, or her parents. I understand you're in love with her, but she's in love with Derek. You have a girlfriend who's waiting on you. Derek or her parents will be here shortly. Go clean up. Go take a shower" Callie said, sternly, with an eyebrow raised. Mark sighed, realizing that Callie could actually physically through him out of the room.
"Go shower"
"Look, even Sapphire thinks so - wait Sapphire!" Callie said, as Mark and her focused as Sapphire was opening her eyes.
"You're awake, oh god. You're finally awake" Mark said, as he put her hand to his forward, just so happy and relieved. Sapphire let out a hint of a smile as both of them hugged her.
"Oh this is wonderful. Mark, call Derek. I'm going to go alert the nurses. Ah! You're awake" Callie said, as she all but ran out of the room to get people.
Sapphire turned over and looked at Mark, who was taking out his cellphone - reluctantly, but for Sapphire's sake.
