A loud steady hum fills the dim room, rousing me from my blissful sleep.
What the heck is that?! I think to myself angrily as I let out a long muffled groan into my pillow.
As the hum continues, I roll over in bed to look at the green illuminated numbers on the digital alarm clock resting on the nightstand. 6:07 AM.
Who the hell wakes up this early? School day or not, class doesn't even start for a good three hours!
This meant that whoever was making that disruptive noise just took away good two hours of sleep, and everyone knows that a less sleep makes me even grumpier and insulting than normal.
I peel out of bed; the rage boiling inside of me as I head for the bathroom next door. I know this house well enough to know it was originating from there. I also had a pretty good idea at who was making all the ruckus at six in freaking morning!
When I get out into the hallway, the bathroom door is wide open and beyond it, reveals the source of the maddening sound. Of course my new "step-sister" would be blow-drying her hair this early in the morning.
I had almost forgotten that she was a life-sucking vampire who never slept and instead, spent all her time attempting to perfect every aspect of her self.
Okay, so maybe she isn't really a life-sucking vampire, per se. But she did suck the life out of me, the day she and her equally prissy mother moved in, over two months ago.
Plus, the second part is totally true. Beverley Adams is an annoyingly controlling perfectionist that I have secretly despised ever since first grade when we were paired to present a drama skit together. Beverley literally controlled every move I made and word I said; which drove me crazy.
If you've met me, you would know that I am not one to simply follow along with someone else's dictations like a lost little lamb. Especially when that someone was a six year old little girl with curly pigtails and wearing a My Little Pony t-shirt, commanding me to act like a dog.
No, Nicki Davis made her own path in life. Always had and always will.
That's why me and my "step-sister", Beverley, will never get along. No matter what our parents do, whether it's putting us under the same roof or coming together in holy matrimony, it will always be like fighting fire with fire between us two.
And now, there was about to be yet another inferno.
"Would you shut that damn thing off?! Some of us actually need to sleep around here." I shout over the noise as I squinted at Beverley, struggling to adjust my eyes to the bright lighting.
Beverley is still in her silky baby blue pyjamas with the little penguins on them with a light pink cotton bathrobe wrapped around her, but her makeup is already done and her hair half wet; indicating that she had been up for quite some time. See! Visual signs of a vampire!
"Sorry, what did you say?" Beverley asks cluelessly as she turns off the blow dryer in her hand.
"Turn. It. Off! I'm trying to sleep!" I say more clearly so that the deaf girl in front of me would understand.
"Oh, sorry I'm almost done. Five minutes!" Beverley replies before switching the device on again and continuing to tousle her curly brunette hair.
Are you fucking serious?
I feel like ripping that damn blow dryer out of her manicured hand and smashing it to pieces on the floor. That would probably make her really mad. Just like how I am feeling right now.
