“I know.”

“But you should still come.”

“Quit being a dick.”

“Okay, fine but just so you know I’m going to have to tell her.”

“I know.”

“Okay then see you later.”

That’s what I heard from Ashton’s conversation in the hallway. I can piece it together, I think…

So, Calum called Ashton, for some reason I don’t know of, and Ashton wants him to come visit, but Calum doesn’t want to for another unknown reason, and now Ashton is going to come in here to tell me exactly that.

Why doesn’t Calum want to come see me? Is someone not allowing him to come see me? I didn’t meet him the other day when I met the other boys, so I don’t think he wouldn’t be allowed to see me, but then again, I don’t know.

“So that was Luke on the phone.” Ashton says and stuffs his hands in his pockets.

“Why did Luke call you?” I didn’t realize I had said it until it was out of my mouth. “Oh I didn’t mean to..”

“Oh no that’s fine he just wanted to know how you were doing he heard about the accident from Calum and was… uhm… busy and couldn’t come over here with me.” He says so quietly I could barely hear the last few words he uttered.

“Oh, well you seem pretty upset what’s going on?”

“Nothing, Luke is just a busy guy…” Ashton is no longer looking at me, but rather the small T.V. on the wall. I suddenly notice the room get colder.

A man with gray hair and a tall, stocky figure walks in. He has a box tucked under his right arm, and is wearing a white lab coat. I assume he’s the orthopedic surgeon. He stands in between Ashton and I ending our previous conversation. Ashton sits on one of the two chairs in front of the window.

“Hello, Madi correct?” The surgeon says and I have the urge to tell him no to get him out of the room to continue the conversation with Ashton.

“Yea, that’s me.” I sound like I had just lost a war and all my hope had died inside of me.

“Okay well I’m going to be putting a cast on your left arm from about here,” He places his hand just below my elbow, “to your hand. Now what color would you like it to be?” I look to Ashton for help in this major decision in my life.

“You should get purple!” Ashton suggests happily.

“Then purple it is.” I say to the surgeon while smiling. He pulls out the materials needed to make me a purple cast, and begins to put my arm into the cast.

“Ashton, will you please hand me that stack of papers on the desk? I need to get those filled out before the lawyers come back.” Ashton walks over and grabs the papers off the desk and takes a look at them.

“You’re seventeen?” Ashton questions me.

“Yea, my birthday is July 18th.”

“That’s less than four days away!” Ashton hands me the paperwork and a pen to fill it out. “Luke’s birthday is the 16th. He’s two days older than you.” He starts laughing slightly. I love his laugh it’s so fun and could easily brighten up someone’s day.

“Yea I guess he is. We’ll all have to go out to dinner for our birthdays!”

Ashton gives me a confused look and says, “All of us?”

“Yea, you know you, Michael, Calum, Luke, Laila, Grace and I.” The doctor finishes up with the cast and leaves the room to let me and Ashton figure out the details of the ‘party’. Maybe I shouldn’t have said anything.

“Oh, yea that would be fun I’ve never met Laila or Grace. I only know you and if they’re anything like you they should be really fun and outgoing people.” Ashton blushes at the last part of his sentence.

“Oh well Grace is not as outgoing as me, but she surely is fun and sweet, and Laila is insane. She is so fun and outgoing, even more than me. But he appearance suggests otherwise, not that she’s weird looking she just has this bright red hair, and dresses… well interestingly.” I begin to laugh at my description of Laila.

“Oh well I’m best friends with Michael and have you seen him? He’s got an… alternative… way of dressing.” He smiles and I notice his ocean deep dimples.

“Oh yes, they’ll love each other when they meet!” I begin to laugh harder and Ashton joins in.

When our laughter begins to cease, Ashton says “Where should we go for dinner? We don’t know many good places around town, so I assume you’d be better at picking a place.”

“We could go to ‘California Kitchen’ it’s my favorite place to eat, I think you guys will like it.”

“Oh yea, I’ve heard of that place but never went there for dinner.”

“Now when?” We’re going to need a date and time if we want this to work out.

“How about the 17th at 6:30p.m. It’s right in between both of your birthdays!”

“Okay, just text me if you need the address or anything.” I put my hand out for him to put his phone in my hand. He gives me it and I place my 10 digit number in it.

“Alright you should be good to go!” I hand him his phone back and he slips it back into his pocket.

“Uhm.. Madi?”

“Yea..?”

“Luke didn’t come because he was scared you’d be worse off than you actually are. He isn’t busy he just didn’t think he could handle seeing you in a bad state if you were. When I told him that your arm was just broken he still didn’t want to come. He was afraid I was lying or something. I’ll bring him by tomorrow or something.”

“I think the hospital is releasing me later today, and oh! I almost forgot about the party, I don’t think I’m going to be able to make it because of this whole thing.” I say directing my attention to my newly casted arm, “You guys don’t have to go; you can come over to my house or something. I feel bad you’ll be at a party where you don’t know anyone.”

“Yea, I’ll ask the boys what they want to do. But I don’t think they’ll like to be at a party where they know no one.” Ashton takes his phone out of his pocket and dials someone; I’m guessing it’s one of the boys.

“Okay, just let me know.” He nods and runs his hand through his chestnut hair as he walks out into the hallway.
