Dead To Me - Melanie Martinez

"Hi, Coll! Can we sit with you? You look like you would like some company,"Matthew asks Colleen when he sees her sitting all alone during recess. Tyler and Becca are standing next to him, curious about the brunette girl being all alone.

"S-Sure,"Coll replies and the three friends sit next to her.

Tyler and Becca talk between them, laughing every few seconds. Matt is listening to their conversation but he is more focused on Coll's silence. She is staring at the playground filled with kids playing in groups.

She's never this quiet. She always talks and talks, it's one of the things she does the best. But it hurt her that the majority of the kids in the class made fun of her. Silence is sort of her copping mechanism. It's how her father mostly knew she was feeling down too: when he didn't hear her talk about literally anything, something was up.

"You're too quiet. My dad is quiet too. But that's because he is sad. He says it's because of my mom. Are you sad like him?"Matt asks.

Colleen looks at him and then down to the ground,"A little."

"Why?"

"Because of Angelica. She made fun of my dad."

Matt sighs and nods,"She's a meanie. Don't listen to her."

"But she laughed about my dad liking boys, MatPat. All the people do."

"Not all of them. I don't."

She gives him a weird look. This isn't the response she thought she would get from him at all. "Why? Don't you think my dad is a weirdo like her and the rest of the class do?"

"No. My dad likes boys too."

Her faces lights up. She has never meet other kids whose parents are LGTB+ too. Only in movies or tv shows and those were clearly fictional in every sense of the word. "He does?"

"Yup. And girls. He likes everyone. Or something like that. He never explained to me."

"Oh."

"I mean, he loves my mom with all of his heart still. And he loved a boy before her."

"Really? My dad used to love two boys before. Separately, obviously. But he says the love ended with both of them. Never told me why."

"That's sad. Love should never end. It should last forever like in Disney movies."

She nods in agreement. He smiles at her. She smiles back.

The two of them are silent, their friends still talking excitedly about some new Pokémon games -Sun & Moon-. It's a nice silence, not sad like before. It's a silence they both are comfortable with.

They like each other, not as a crush but more as a friend who understands without having to understand what's going on inside your head or the situation at all. They really need a friend like that.

"Hey, MatPat?"she asks.

"Yes, Coll?"he replies.
