Learn to love the broken ones, my mother always reminded me, over and over the quote rung in my ears through countless years. My heart thumped harder than ever that one night, my voice a creaky rasp, echoing through the dark hallways of my house. She's gone now, forever lost in the depths of earth's countless memories, but I swear I can still feel her light, small hands clasping around me, arms tight and breath soft. Her skin was pure as a dove's the day I lost her, her promise to always keep me safe from harm shattered with her life, as God swept her away into the darkness, never to be seen again. I could still remember my father, but only as a drunken memory. His weary eyes and battered heart, he'd only used slight whispers before leaving us, barely coming in contact with my mother and I other than times of grief or longing. He hadn't really been a fan of my mother or I, but it's just a memory now. Brainwashed by grief and horror of the experience I'd had to witness, my feet forever to be stuck in the ground, pain surging through me every breath. I'd only have come here to find a reason to live, my heart burning with the desire to at least meet a friend. Someone true.
