Lyric's Lullaby

My wailing cut to short sharp breaths as I burrowed deep into her arms, my mother holding me tight and I beaded my head against her chest, pleading for her affection. My breath caught in my throat as she sighed, patting my back and pushing the hair from my shoulder to my back, tugging on it softly as she brushed through it with her fingers. My rough breathing shortened, and my balling turned into a wail, as I grasped her waist.

"Mommy, mommy, I can still feel the water!" I cried, holding tightly onto Lyric as I wailed. "Please make the pain stop!"

Lyric looked down at me, her gaze bright and welcoming. A wave of pain rushed through me as my body was chilled, the feeling of water relishing back into my lungs. I gasped for air, as Lyric picked me up. Her gaze softened more on me as she rocked me slowly, as she had done when I was younger. Shock flooded through me that she could even still pick me up.

"I reckon the time we had left there would be short." Lyric murmured, brushing her hand through my hair. I took a deep breath in, taking in her sweet scent. I grasped her arm and hugged it, pushing my face into it as she rocked me.

"Don't let your sorrows guide you way," she sang softly, her voice cracking and thick with love. "Don't ever let me decay away." The words rung in my ears heavy. Don't ever let me decay away Will you let me decay, mommy? I pleaded half-heartedly. My pulse felt warm and beated slowler, my eyes growing wider as I looked up at her.

"For all this life I shall live," she continued, "I swear to you to never fib." She whispered to me.

"I know our time may be shorter as of now, but always remember that I'll always be here, beneath your brow." She brushed my hair out of my face, starting to rock me slower. "Don't let my sparks be the end, of your soon growing light." She recited, her voice fading off as she took a breath, rocking me slower.

My eyes suddenly felt heavy as she rocked me, her soft lullaby over. "Sleep..." She breathed, her rocks seemingly slowing as a new tire pulled over me.
