Rose Weasley was convinced that she was ugly all because James had said mid-summer before her second year that boys only hang out with ugly girls, they're too nervous around the pretty ones and if you see a pretty girl as a friend to a guy then they would likely end up dating.
James hadn't been thinking about the fact that Rose was right beside him and had only guy friends, and because her friends, Max Everard and Scorpius Malfoy (we're not counting Albus), were NEVER going to have feelings for her, then she was a dog.
She didn't know that she was pleasant to the eye until fifth year when she finally came out and asked Max if she was pretty. Max clearly and confidently told her the answer that she had not been expecting, plus a couple colorful additions about how stupid it was to ask because obviously, she was, or had she never looked into a mirror?
