7 years later

"Marcus," Kellin laughed, tugging the sock from the toddlers hands, "Marcus give back daddy's sock."

The toddler let out a squeal as his dad pulled him onto his lap.

"What's the magic word?" Marcus giggled, yanking the sock back.

"Abracadabra?"

He shook his head.

"Please?"

The 4 year old grinned, "nope."

The argument continued for a little while until a certain little girl tumbled into the room.

She unsteadily walked to Kellin and scrambled onto his lap, pushing her older brother out the way.

"Happy second birthday sweetie," Kellin smiled , ruffling her short, blonde hair.

"People will start coming in-" Vic walked into the room, glancing at the watch his husband gave him for Christmas, "about an hour."

"C'mon princess," Kellin said to Chloe, "we've got to set up for your party."

The girl shuffled off his lap and began irritating her brother.

"I'm so glad we adopted," Vic hummed, watching as the two kids annoyed one another.

"Me too," Kellin sighed, "I couldn't picture my life without them."

They were interrupted by the door opening.

"Vic?" Mike had walked into the lounge area, one hand holding a present and a box, most likely with the cake in, the other holding the hand of a young girl, his daughter.

"Uncle Vic! Uncle Kelly!" Arden, Mike's daughter, ran to the married couple wrapping her arms tightly around the pair.

"Hey sweetie," Vic smiled, kissing her cheek, "why don't you go and find Chloe and Marcus?"

The browned haired girl nodded, turning on her heal and running to the back room.

"Where do I put the present?" Mike asked, smiling at the couple.

"Just put it here."

He placed the gift down and walked to his brother, embracing him.

"How's it going bro?" he chuckled, releasing his brother.

"Good, good, and you?"

"Fantastic, me and Katie have something to announce later," he enthused.

"That's great, however as much as I'd like to continue this conversation, we have to a party to prepare."

"What can I do to help?"

"Mike, if you do the bunting because you're tall and you can reach higher," Vic commanded, party planner mode going into action, "Kel, you prepare outside, set the barbecue up and get all the food."

The back yard was spacious, enough so that they could have a patio where they tended to hold barbecues in the summer. A trampoline for the kids was in the back left corner, and two empty kiddie pools were central. One Vic was going to fill with water, the other was going to be balls, as to make a ball pit.

The first guests arrived 45 minutes later, it was Kellin's co-worker Gordon, his wife and two kids.

They settled on the seats in the back.

Not long later, more guests arrived.

"Hi Kellin," his mom greeted him.

"Hi mom, I've missed you," he said, pulling her into a hug, "if you just put the gift on the table and come to the back."

It wasn't long before there was another knock at the door, revealing three old friends, friends they hadn't seen in years.

"Jaime! Tony!" Kellin, tears almost springing to his chocolate eyes, embraced the pair.

However Vic eyes were transfixed on someon else.

Ruby.

"Rubes?" he whispered, smiling at the red-headed ball of innocence.

"Vic," she grinned wide, not hesitating to pull the long haired Mexican into a warm, tight hug.

Sure, he'd seen Tony and Jaime since the institute, but Rubes, he hadn't seen her since he left.

Her hair was still red, faded, sure, but still red. Eyes blue as ever, looking over the brotherly figure .

"God, Ruby, it's been so long," he paused, "come on in, come meet my kids."

After catching up, Vic noticed that, although she was still particularly childish, Ruby was much more grown up than she had been back at St Johns.

Finally, after all the guests arrived, every one was sat in the yard.

Mike, with a grin on his face, tapped his champagne flute.

"I'd like to make a quick announcement," he held his girlfriends hand, staying silent for a few seconds to build the tension.

"Katie is pregnant again."

Every one cheered and congratulated him and his fiancé.

The kids were in the back playing in the pool and the make-shift ball pit. Mike's little girl was sat with one of Kellin's younger cousins.

As they took in the sight of family and friends around them, they realised, even with a past as shitty as theirs, they were each their own person and no matter how difficult it ha sheen growing up, it was well worth it.

Because it was beautiful.

And they couldn't have been any happier.
