Pairing: Charles Xavier x Reader
Imagine: Finding yourself in sudden possession of powers.
Warnings: NoneYou were only 8 years old when you saw your first mutant.
You had just moved to Westchester County, New York with your family and didn't know anybody. You were used to entertaining yourself, so it wasn't unusual that you were playing in a park near your house all by yourself.
You climbed up to the tippy top of the play structure, sitting precariously on top of the highest slide. You watched over the park, pretending to the ruler of a far away kingdom.
There was another little girl in the park, on the swings. She was pushing and pulling violently, the swing getting higher and higher.
You wanted to cry out to the girl to be careful, to warn her that she may fall as you'd done before. She swung back, legs kicking, and her little fingers slipped. She went tumbling towards the ground, gravity pulling her back down to earth
Your jaw was open, eyes wide as you watched her fall. Just before she hit the ground face first- she stopped. And so did your breathing.
She was stuck mid-air, arms and legs thrashing. A young boy that you hadn't seen before was standing near her, his arms stretched out in front of him. The girl slowly floated down to the ground, coming to rest on her feet without a scratch on her.
It was quiet for a moment, before the girl let out a shriek and burst into tears. She took off running, assumedly back to her parents.
You forced air back into your lungs, relief and wonder filling you. You slid off your make believe castle, walking over to the strange boy.
"Hi! Did you just save that girl?"
He shrugged, shoving his hands into his pockets. You smiled at him, trying to be encouraging. Mama always said that sometimes the quiet kids were just too shy to speak up.
"Thank you. She didn't say thank you, so I'm doing it for her."
He gave you a little smile before spinning on his heel and walking off in the oppose direction.
You stared at his retreating figure before shrugging and jogging back towards home. You couldn't wait to tell Mama what you'd seen.

20 years later you were still living in Westchester County, not too far from the newly instated School For Gifted Youngsters. You sometimes wondered if the boy from all those years ago was there now. You hoped he was well, wherever he was.
You were 28 now with a masters degree in Teaching and Psychology. Yet regardless of your shining diploma and outstanding grades, you had no job. You'd been looking, make no mistake of that. But every offer was either outrageously lowballing or with a group who had views you couldn't support.
Your well-off parents sent you money monthly to struggled to jump start your life. They'd moved away years ago, leaving you in the only place you could really call home. You lived alone, spending your days occupying book stores and cafes, waiting for some sign to come along. A sign as to what you were supposed to do with your life.
You wanted to be part of something bigger. Something that would change the world, something more important than a lonely girl wasting her life away in fictional worlds. It was silly, but a desire you could not shake.
When you woke up one morning in particular you found no good food in your house. You hated grocery shopping, often leading to you just not going all together. So you pulled jeans on along with a sweater, wanting to be prepared for the New York autumn weather.
