Warnings: mentions of abuse/violenceYou stepped into your house, a sigh of relief leaving your lips are you slipped your shoes off and threw your keys onto the counter. You took out your ponytail and untied the apron around your waist.
Dry lightening cracks across the skies, those storm clouds gather in her eyes
Your shift at the local diner had been particularly grueling. You'd been given the midnight shift and for some unknown reason it was busy all night. You dumped your tips out, counting the change. You were halfway through when you heard someone start coming down the steps.
Her daddy was a mean old mister, mama was an angel in the ground
You pushed the money back into your apron pocket and straightened yourself up just in time for your father to walk in. He was as dirty as ever, and the brief thought that you weren't sure of the last time he showered flashed through your head.
He wore a permanent sneer and glared at you. "Your sister's sick, she refused to go to school."
The weather man called for a twister, she prayed blow it down
You paled. Your sister absolutely loathed being home, so she would have to be deathly ill to miss school. You nodded and scurried away before he could say anything else. You took the steps two at a time, quickly making your way to your younger sisters room.
There's not enough rain in Oklahoma, to wash the sins out of that house
It was dark and you could barely make out her form laying in bed. You walked over and sat on the edge on the bed, resting your hand on her shoulder to find she was shaking. With a frown you flipped the lights on. It took everything in you to keep from screaming at the sight that greeted you.
There's not enough wind in Oklahoma, to rip the nails out of the past
Your sister, your beautiful and innocent little sister, was nearly unrecognizable. Her right eye was bruised, a scabbed slice on her cheek. Her lip was split and her jaw was bruised. She was crying softly as she reached out for you.
Shatter every window 'til it's all blown away
You scooped her up, holding her to your chest.
"I'm sorry I wasn't here to protect you," your voice was shaking as you wept silently, trying to keep it together. "He's never going to do that again, you hear me?"
She continued to tremble in your arms. "I want mama."
Every brick, every board, every slammin' door blown away
You squeezed your eyes shut and choked on a sob. "Me too, baby. Me too."
Before you could comfort her anymore, your father roared downstairs, "You better get your whore ass downstairs right now, (y/n)! And bring your lazy ungrateful sister!"
'Til there's nothing left standing, nothing left of yesterday
Your eyes snapped open, anger growing. Enough was enough. You urged your sister to pack a bag as quickly as she could while you handled your father.
It was time to leave.
Every tear soaked whiskey memory blown away, blown away
"Grab the money we've been saving up, it's hidden in my sock drawer ok? And go to dads room and grab whatever change you can find, he usually has some hidden in his pillowcase."
