Pairing: None
Imagine: After the death of Lily and your older brother you go into hiding for your protection. Dumbledore tells you that Harry was killed along with his parents, and you spend years thinking that all of your family was gone. Then one day Albus stops by with a reveal that changes your life.
Warnings: NoneThere wasn't a day spent not thinking about your older brother James. Not a day that you did not miss Lily, a day that you questioned why you didn't get more time with them, more time with Harry.
You remembered the day Harry was born like it was yesterday. You'd always loved children but the moment you laid eyes on the tiny boy with bright eyes, you were a goner.
James and Lily teased that little Harry was going to grow up so spoiled and you couldn't wait to do the spoiling. You couldn't wait to babysit so the new parents could get a break, to take him out for his birthday and let him do things his parents wouldn't. You couldn't wait.
Fate, however, had other plans.
Lily and James were wonderful to Harry. There might not be such a thing as perfect parents but they were pretty damn close. They deserved better.
You hummed to yourself. It wasn't good to dwell in such thoughts but you couldn't help it.
You stood from the chair where you sat with your breakfast, moving quietly through your kitchen and living room into the back hall where an old closet stood. You avoided this door like the plague, the pain usually too much to even linger outside it.
But it was a lonely Sunday morning and you were missing your brother and his family more than usual.
So you opened the creaky door and reached for the top shelf, pulling out a thick black book. Dust spiraled into the air, raining down on you and making you sneeze. You closed the closet door behind you and padded back to the living room.
You tucked yourself into your favorite rocking chair and cracked open the book. Memories came flooding back as the smiling faces of Lily and James greeted you.
Each picture was something different, spanning back from your time in school together. The Marauders were heavily featured in most of the pictures, no surprise, as they were your preferred company during your time at Hogwarts. Your eyes paused on a close up of Sirius grinning widely. Merlin, what a handsome young wizard he was. You'd fancied him for as long as you could remember, but then he-
You felt your throat begin to close and hurried to the next page. You flipped through all of the moving photos, smiling sadly at the faces you would give anything to see again. You finally made it towards the end of the book where the final few pages are dedicated to Harry.
There were pictures of him moments after being born, cradled in Lily's arms as James cries by her side. Pictures of James kissing his tiny little forehead, whispering him promises of love and happiness.
A drop of water splashes on one of the pictures and it's only then you realize you're crying. The passing years made it no easier, no less painful.
The very last picture ever placed in the book was of a younger you, cradling Harry in his favorite blankie. He was staring up at you with wide curious eyes as you cooed down at him.
You brushed your fingers against the picture softly, wishing you could be back in that moment. He would've looked so much like James, you could just tell.
A knock at the front door interrupted your thoughts and you slammed the book shut harder than necessary. You set it down and hurried to your front door, checking the peep hole. You weren't expecting any visitors and you couldn't help but feel a bit jumpy.
