My name is Shane Mathias. This time, I won't tell you about the me that I've been told about. I'll tell you what I know.
The me that I'd been told about hadn't been around in a while. Yes, I'd respected people, but I'd forgotten about the people that matter. That night on the road I'd been angry and unhappy with myself. I'd pushed away the only person that would ever really stick with me.
You may have disappointed some people along the road, or you left them behind because you thought that they just got in your way. You forget that everything comes with a price that has to be paid, and not everything will survive. You have to prioritize you list of things that really matter. Don't get caught up with whatever it is that you think you want because you might end up without what you need.
My mother probably turned in her grave at the thought of me leaving my sister behind! But even after all these years, I'd never forgotten what my mother told me. She used to say it all the time:
"God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can and the wisdom to know the difference."
There will always be someone for you when things don't go well. They maybe right next to you, or they may take longer to find, but someone will be there. My sister was the person I went to when things didn't go well. I don't know how I hadn't realized that I'd left my sister behind sooner. But I'm thankful that eventually I did. Even if I hadn't had that accident, my sister would have welcomed me back with open arms, and I would have never learned. She would have accepted me at the time I needed her the most, but I would have probably just left her again. With that accident, I know I'll never leave her.
I won't tell you what caused me to need my sister so much, sorry to disappoint. But you don't need to know; it doesn't matter. We all have different stories, and yours won't be the same as mine. Just remember to be grateful for what you have because you won't know when it's gone.
