"i love you baby!" your fiance, ellington, giggled, kissing you softly as you both stood by the door.
"i don't want you to go..." you whimpered softly, kissing him softly again, your arms hanging tightly around his neck so when he turned around to walk to his car, you were dragged along with him.
ellington was about to go on tour with your bestfriends and his band mates for several months and you had planned to meet him in a few days to continue the rest of the tour with him, but due to your work arrangements, you couldn't be there for the first four days which hurt you incredibly. you hadn't been away from him since you guys met and you were also recently engaged which made it even harder for you to part although you were planning on getting married in New York when you got there.
"Babe, you know i have to go. you'll be okay and i'll see you in a few days." he protested, walking towards his car, you dragging behind him.
you jumped so you were riding on his back, clinging onto him. "i don't know how the toaster works, what if i starve?!"
"then maybe, you should have something other than toast." he giggled a bit, pitting his bag in the trunk of his car before trying to pry your arms from around his neck. you held on firmly, refusing to let go.
"what if something happens to you?" you whimpered, holding on tighter and resting your head on his shoulder.
"im in perfectly safe hands, don't worry about me." he told you, managing to wrestle your hands from around his neck and put you on the floor. he turned around, hugging you tightly.
you remained silent, enjoying the hug and knowing it would be days until you got to hug him again. you looked up at him. "what if you have one of your bad dreams? i won't be able to hold you.." you whispered to him.
"if that happens, i will immediately video call you and we will talk. i promise. we're going to video chat every day, morning and night and i'll call you at lunch at work too. okay?" he assured you, you nodding. you passionately kissed him, a kiss that last a few minutes before he climbed into his car.
you stepped back, crossing your arms over your chest and waving as he drive away, knowing you would see him shortly.
you went back into your house. you were a doctor and you knew you had an important operation to perform so you changed into your work clothes. you sent ellington a text saying "i miss you already but i love you" before making your way to work.
work hours were painful and long and you couldn't help but notice how much you missed ellington, even though you tried to keep work and your love life seperate. the operation was a success and you were able to tell someone that their cancerous kidney had been replaced by a perfectly functional one and they would hopefully be cancer free. it was a good day.
you flopped down on the couch when you got in, letting out a tired sigh. you checked the time and realised it was time that you and ellington would video chat. you pulled out your phone, turning on the tv and pulling a blanket over your legs. you couldn't be bothered to change and you knew how much ellington liked your doctors uniform so you left it on.
your jaw dropped and you dropped your phone on the floor when you saw what was on tv. there was a crash scene on the tv, one car on top of another. the bottom car you knew all too well. it was ellington's.
tears streamed down your cheeks as you saw ellington's face appear on the screen and heard the words "he was rushed to the local hospital in a critical condition". you jumped up immediately, running to your car and climbing in.
you couldn't understand why you didn't see him when you'd been working at hospital all day. tears streamed down your cheeks as you drove, your vision impaired by them but you didn't let that stop you.
the second you arrived, you parked up running inside. you climbed behind the desk, looking through the sheets of paper that listed patients and their rooms. the second you saw his name, you ran in the direction of his room.
you saw his room looming ahead and doctors and nurses seemed to constantly stream in and out of his room. you ran in and over to him.
he looked awful. his face was covered in deep gashes, his head wrapped in a bandage and his body in a varying amount of casts, bandages and just horrible bruises. more tears fell when you saw the love of your life in such a bad state and you ran over to him, sitting on the bed with him. he loosely wrapped an arm around you, it being the best he could do.
"baby.." you whispered as tears fell down your cheeks. "you promised you'd be okay.."
"you were supposed to video chat with me." he giggled a bit. you couldn't help but smile through your tears, he really was adorable.
the amount of doctors passing in and out of the room lessened as they knew your status as a good doctor and a brilliant surgeon and they knew he was in good hands.
you both sat talking for a while, him managing to make you giggle a bit which you were so grateful for. he wiped you're tears and kissed you a few times. you felt happy, knowing he was safer.
gradually, the both of you grew more tired. you settled down, your head on his shoulder as he held you.
"wake me if you have a bad dream..." you told him softly, your eyes closing.
he didn't reply for a while, but when he did it was short and simple.
"im going to die." he whispered.
you opened your eyes, looking at him. "don't be so stupid, you're not going to die!" you told him but suddenly how weak and pale he was became clear. you knew he had bad internal bleeds and that he had lost a lot of blood but you didn't seem to think more of it until now.
he nodded, looking down as a tear rolled down his cheek. "you'll be okay without me.." he whispered.
you shook your head, refusing to believe it. "ellington, im pregnant.." you whispered.
he smiled a bit. "that's wonderful. now you won't be alone."
"ellington! you can't leave me! you can't!" you sobbed, tears falling harder and faster than ever. "we're supposed to get married! we're supposed to start a family! we're supposed to be together for ever!"
ellington slid back, his body beginning to relax. "promise you won't forget me..?" he whispered.
you couldn't believe what was happening. you squeezed his hand, crying harder. "i won't. never ever."
he smiled a bit. "i'll come to you if i have a bad dream. always." he whispered.
"always." you repeated.
"i love you."
"i love you too."
and with that, he took his final breath. the machine monitoring his heart rate let out a final, long beep and his heart that had always been filled with love for you was beating no more.
