My name is Hope Kennedy and I am 17 years old. Mostly everyone I love, is dead or enslaved by Komiten. As of right now, it is the year 2042. Most people didn't think we'd make it this far, but we have. Sadly enough, some of us are barely making it. Let me explain...
In the year 2033, a man named Nathaniel Komiten found a way to change the world. We didn't need trees, or plants. Everything could be accessed by the push of a single button. Perfection, as we knew it, was approaching us. My parents helped him build the mighty city, Johanna, what was previously known as New York City. Perfection was built here, but perfection is not here.
Nathaniel Komiten worked with many other people on his "project" to "save the world." My parents, were some of those people. My father was an engineer that could build and perfect anything he touched. My mother was key in the science behind building Johanna, making Johanna possible. But no one knew that Nathaniel Komiten had a different plan in mind.
He formed an alliance: Komiten Security, KomSec as we call it. He said it was to protect the people and flush out what the world didn't need. He was dangerous, but my parents continued their work, to provide for our family. My parents were honest working people. They wanted nothing more than to raise a family that didn't have to worry about anything. The world was on board with Johanna, The City of Perfection. As the money grew, Komiten's greed grew with it. He wanted to run everything by himself, and when the time came, he did. With the support of the world leaders behind him, KomSec raided the city. Whoever didn't comply, was compromised. My mother and father packed my sister Lailani and I up and we were going south. KomSec, met us at the door. There was no waiting. There was no hope. Komiten grabbed my parents, and I would soon find out that they were being raided because my mother took her materials and ran. Komiten didn't have his key element. He didn't know that she planted it in Lailani's headband.
Komiten interrogated my parents but they didn't tell where the substance was. I watched from my bedroom window with Lailani next to me, when KomSec shot and killed my parents. When he announced that he was out to find us, I grabbed what I could and ran. Lailani was scared, and she was vocal about it. KomSec raided our house, throwing a toxic gas into the house. I told Lailani to hold her breath but she didn't. When I realized she was down, KomSec was coming. I shook her, checked her pulse, and she was gone. I left her that day, at eight years old, I ran for my life. I bumped into a man when I checked my parents' bodies. He asked my name, and I noticed he was dressed differently that anybody on the ground would dress. His name is Keith and he's a runner.
I am a Runner. We are high in the sky, our feet never touch the ground. We hide, but seek justice for those who are in need. Komiten hates us and we hate him too. KomSec is always watching us, and waiting for us, but we will always be twenty years ahead of them.
But I will run, and run, and run until I get justice for my parents.
My name is Hope. Run when you see me coming...
