Right after school, Bree took me to the art club. I looked around in awe at the open concept, the potter wheels, and all of the colors of paint, glaze, and colored glass.
"Like it, huh?" A girl with red hair and a painter's smock came up to me. "Hey, i'm Annette. Netty for short."
"How...how do you get all of this stuff?" I whispered in awe.
She smiled mysteriously. "We get by. My dad is an artist, and my aunt is an art dealer, so we learn a lot of cool history and techniques!"
"Neat! Where do I sign?"
"Here." She lead me to a giant mural of names and symbols.
I quickly scribbled my name and a heart.
She studied my handwriting. "You're the creative type, I see!"
I smiled. "I did do some sketches on the ranch-"
"Hold up!" Bree said. "You lived on a ranch?"
"Yeah," I said mournfully.
"Hey, maybe you can take us on the weekend? If you still own it, that is."
I sighed. "We do still own it. My mom had us move because of her job, so now my aunt owns the ranch."
Bree practically glowed with inspiration. "The sunset snaps I could take!" She gushed. "The vibrant rock formations! I could spend a month there and still not capture it all!!!"
I smiled. "Pack your bags girls. Sunset Ranch, here we come!"
Friday couldn't come soon enough. Logan agreed to drive us on the condition that we wouldn't jostle him. Hey, he was still new to this driving thing!
Right away, Annette and Logan hit it off. They started talking about everything from the top songs to the forest next to our school and all the colors of fall.
Bree and I vlogged in the backseat until we hit the Montana border. Instantly I was filled with a sense of relief. I was home, even for however short of a time it was.
"WHOOO HOOOOOO!!!" Bree and I shouted out the window, our hair whipping in the wind. We were unchained, free birds, soaring in the first light of the sunset.
Annette had long since fallen asleep once we made it to the winding path that led to Sunset.
"We're here," Logan whispered, not wanting to wake Annette.
We quietly climbed out of the car and went to the back to pack our bags. Before I could get a good hold on mine, though, Annette started to scream, and thumped to the hard packed dirt.
"Please! No! Take me, not them! No! NO!!!" She wailed. I ran to the front of the truck, threw open the door, and shook her shoulders.
"Annette! Hey wake up!"
"Annette, nothing's gonna hurt you," my brother yelled a couple yards away. She thrashed and kicked. "No... please!" She was sobbing uncontrollably.
Suddenly I felt like I was falling, and then all of a sudden I was with Annette in a smoldering hot room with who could only be her family, all with her red hair. They were being forced down a long hallway down to what I assumed was a dungeon.
"Annette! Wake up! This isn't real! You can beat it! Wake UP!"
With a start, I suddenly fell out of the nightmare and collapsed to the ground.
"Sayge? SAYGE!" Logan called. He ran over and helped me up, and I immediately fell down again. Bree looped my arm over her shoulder, and dragged me up to the front door. Before she could even knock, though, my aunt opened the door. She gasped, then picked me up as if I weighed nothing, The last thing I heard before I blacked out was Annette's waking cry and Logan running towards the house.
