"Angie! Angie wake up!" Emma was whisper-shouting in my ear.
"CHARGE!" I screamed, sitting up abruptly.
"Angie be quiet! Are you trying to get us caught?"
"Oh, sorry."
"Are you okay? You were sweating,"
I decided to keep my dream a secret "Oh, yeah I was just...hot. Too many blankets,"
Emma looked at me suspiciously, but decided to leave me alone. "Alright, get dressed we have to leave soon." I got dressed and tip-toed to the door.
"Is that everybody?" Dorothy said once I got there.
"Yep! Let's go before we make any more noise," Rebecca said pushing the button to leave. We walked down to the cafeteria where we saw Arthur, Matt and some new boy waiting for us. He was tall and had light brown hair and blue eyes.
"Who is that?" I asked once we got closer.
"This is Charles. Arthur woke him up my accident and since he knew about our mission we had to take him along.
"Oh, hi Charles I'm Angie and this is Emma, Dorothy and Rebecca," I waved.
"Hello," Charles waved back.
"Alright enough with the greetings," Matt said annoyed "Let's get some food and get out. It's 6:45." We snuck into the kitchen and grabbed some sandwiches. We each made a breakfast and wrapped it up to eat on the way. We made it to the door alright and I silently prayed that Alvin wouldn't be there to stop us this time.
"Hold up, I hear footsteps," Charles halted when we got to the corner near the door. We peeked around the corner and saw Alvin walking with Edna. And they were coming towards us.
"Come on!" Matt whispered urging us to run back towards the cafeteria. None of us hesitated. We ran back to the cafeteria, and hid underneath one of the tables in the corner. I heard the footsteps coming closer, faster now. My heart was pounding in my chest.
"I saw those kids! They ran in here!" Alvin bellowed as he stormed into the cafeteria. I heard him smashing things, and flipping over tables looking for us. My heart nearly stopped when walked towards our table. "Aha! I knew they were in here!" he yelled to Edna "You kids thought you could hide from us huh? Well I don't think so!" He lifted up the table we were under. I could barely comprehend what was happening so Charles grabbed my arm and we ran out of the cafeteria and out the doors.
"Thank you, you saved my life," I said breathing heavily.
"No problem. We gotta stick together!" I didn't get a chance to respond because at that moment, the others came charging through the door.
"RUN!" They screamed, Alvin running right behind them. I ran and ran and ran. The others caught up to me. After what seemed like hours we looked back to see Alvin bent over tiredly.
He stood back up and yelled, waving his fist in the air "I WILL GET YOU!"
"We lost him," I said after a while of walking "Emma, how long to your dad's boathouse?"
"Just about another mile this way,"
"Ugh, I'm hungry can we stop and eat?" Dorothy whined
"Here? In the middle of nowhere? My dad's boathouse has some benches we could sit on, come on let's wait 'till we get there,"
"Fine," Dorothy sighed. We trekked along the withered, dry Earth until we came across a building right on the edge of a shallow pit, which must've been a lake long ago.
"No way," I said astounded "How is...what? How?"
"Omg! It's still here!" Emma shouted and sprinted ahead.
"Let's eat!" Dorothy ran after her. We sat on the dock and dangled our feet over the edge. I unwrapped my bagel and munched away. The flavor rushed my tastebuds.
"Alrighty," Arthur said after a while. "I think we should use that speedboat over there." He ran over to the pearly white speedboat with painted red letters that read 'S.S Moonlight'
"Does it work?" I asked hopping into the front seat.
"Let's find out!" Emma said jumping in next to me. "Oh wait, I need the key." Emma jumped out and ran into the boathouse. Within seconds, of course because Emma was the fastest kid in our grade, she ran out dangling a golden key in her right hand. "Let's start her up dudes!" She pushed the key into the slot and the engine started abruptly.
"Awesome!" Charles shouted.
"Let's load in our stuff and grab life-jackets," Emma lead the way inside the boathouse and we each got a life-jacket that fir us. We ran back outside. The ocean air filled my lungs and I remembered long ago making a sandcastle with my mom on the beach. I still couldn't believe the ocean hadn't dried up. Maybe it had something to do with the saltwater.
"Alright, is everything in?" Rebecca asked.
"Yep that's everything," Emma said "Let's roll!"
Everyone hopped in the boat. Some of us were scared, some excited. We didn't know what the future held, but we were ready to take some risks.
