despite the school's best efforts over the years,

alcohol always made its way to the parking lot

on senior sunset.

i was unsure how he did it,

but somehow,

matt got a keg

and snuck it into the trunk of his car.

i could see the entire football team

crowded around his truck,

clearly intoxicated with

broken red cups,

and spilled beer

scattered on the asphalt.

i walked over there.

"so, is this where the real party is?"

i asked, half joking.

"obviously,"

levi replied, also half joking.

he had a drink in his hand,

like the rest of them,

but he wasn't drunk,

at least not as drunk as everyone else.

"well, look who decided to show up,"

matt said, grinning as he poured himself another beer.

he was already tipsy,

but i knew i wasn't able to stop him.

"for your information,

i've been here the whole time,"

i replied smartly.

"yeah, but you've been here pouting,

not having fun,"

he teased.

i was silent;

i didn't want to give him the satisfaction of being right.

(for once)

one of the guys offered me a cup,

but i refused.

matt scoffed,

his dark brown eyes focusing on me.

"oh, c'mon adelaide.

why don't you ever want to have fun?"

"getting drunk isn't really my idea of fun, matt,"

i replied.

his words slurred now,

and his lips formed a goofy grin.

"but you used to be so fun adelaide,"

he said, dragging out the e.

i smirked. "did i?"

"yeah," he started, taking another sip of his beer.

"you used to drink

and dance,

and sing,

and you liked to play beer pong,

and jump in the pool with all your clothes on,

remember that?

and you liked to talk to everyone

and you laughed at all my bad jokes

and you even laughed when i pushed you in the hot tub

that one time,

and you weren't even mad,"

he paused, his mind muddled by the alcohol.

"why aren't you like that anymore?"

he asked, his eyes wandering toward me.

and i found it interesting,

i found it weird,

that

a drunk matt brogan

was the one who

noticed that i changed.

a drunk matt brogan

was the one who

realized that i was different than before.

a drunk matt brogan

was the one who,

despite his cluttered conscience,

saw beyond

my excuses,

my lies,

my facade.

and he didn't even understand,

he didn't even know,

that what he said

was the reason why i walked away,

crying,

as i thought about how happy i was,

as i thought about how happy asher was.

i thought

why did he have to leave me here all alone,

wondering what i could have done,

wondering if he,

up there in the clouds,

was sad,

like me,

or happy?

and i asked myself,

why?

why couldn't we have just been happy together?
