I blinked for a few seconds, trying to clear my thoughts.

Had I babysat before?

"Well, yeah, I guess." I mumbled, remembering when I was younger a few times I had watched neighbor's children for a few hours here and there.

"Brilliant!" Emma says, clapping her hands together, and I am still left in the dark as she sends yet another text message, and I am left to just nibble away at my food. Just like in most social situations I much rather would be at home on my couch still, rather than in this packed restaurant. Emma's turned her attention back towards me, opening her mouth to speak.

"I know this is so fast and sort of weird, but a friend of mine is just desperate for a nanny. And I only really care this much because lately the girl has been coming over to my house and it's not like I don't love the kid it's just that I'm recently engaged and Louis and I sort of want to just ravage each-" I hold my hand up to cut her off, not really caring about her and her fiancés sex troubles.

"Nanny? Like Mary Poppins?" I ask, not exactly qualified to be sliding down staircases gracefully and singing about sugar in a spoon.

"Well, I guess. He is just gone a lot and needs someone to watch his daughter. I don't know the whole situation, he is actually Louis' best friend, you'd be better off talking to him." She says, and once again, back to her phone. This time I don't even have time to think, because she is standing up, tossing her large purse over her shoulder.

"And we are going to talk to the man himself now. Louis likes meeting friends of mine, so wipe that nervous look off your face." She said, holding her hand out to me. I couldn't help but feel like I was a child; Emma had that effect on people, making people follow her lead willingly.

I stuttered a bit, "Uh, okay." I said standing and placing my much smaller bag over my body.

All I wanted to do today was wallow a bit more in self-pity before Annaleise got home and forced me to fill out the application that her and I both know I wouldn't do by myself and then make the tough choice between Thai and Chinese food and be too lazy to shower and then pass out.

That was my typical Thursday.

But instead I was following Emma out of the café, glancing at my bike that was chained to the small rack on the pavement and back at her. She doesn't notice my look of concern toward my one mean of transportation and continues across the street towards her own car, which by no surprise at the rest of her apparel for the day, is quite lavish.

The damn car probably cost more than my education.

She smiled tightly at me as she walked to the driver's side, as if she knew that this vehicle was quite over the top. I hop into the small sports like car anyways, giving her a soft smile. It's silent for a while on the drive and I know by the route she is taking that we are heading towards Hampstead, which is not a huge surprise to me.

"Noelle is a sweetheart." She says as she is making a left.

"Who is Noelle?" I say, the name ringing no bells whatsoever.

"Oh! Duh. Noelle is the little girl that you would be watching. She is so sassy and quick. Very smart. Sort of odd too, all she seems concerned with is when her dad is coming home and reading books with actual words in them." She says, moving her hands a bit exasperatedly.

"Don't all books have words?" I question as I try not to laugh.

"Yeah, but she is only three years old and reading chapter long books. She is sweet, a bit odd though." She says, and now I noticed we had stopped at a gate and Emma was leaning half way out of the car to type in a code.
