Anne Twist was not a force to be reckoned with.
I learned this relatively quickly when she came over about an hour after Harry and I had returned from grocery shopping. I was standing next to Anne, doing some
dishes before we were going to begin to make the pizza, while she ripped into Harry, who was sat at the island, his shoulders slumped as he sat on a stool.I may have been muttering under my breath about how I wish I was allowed to buy the Nutella I wanted when Anne came in. And that may or may not have been the cause of all this.
"You, Harry Edward should really learn to shut your mouth sometimes. Laney is 26 years old, if the woman wants frozen pizza and questionable processed foods, allow her to have it. Your concern with Laney is how she is treating Noelle, understand?" She questioned Harry, who seemed to just be glaring at her from under his eyebrows, picking at his nails.
"Harry." She said again, stopping the washing of her hands to turn all her attention to him.
"Mum. I'm almost 30, you can't be yelling at me right now." He said, now grabbing his phone out of his sweatshirt, beginning to type. Anne quickly leans over the island, snatching the phone away from his grip.
"I'm your mother, I'll yell at you until you're dead if I so please. I asked if you understood." Anne replies, locking the phone and putting it on the counter behind her.
I couldn't help it, I snickered. But all it took was a side look from Anne to shut me up.
"I understand Mum." Harry grumbles, before easily grabbing the phone back, and returning back to his message.
"Harper is stopping by, apparently. Says she wants to discuss things with you Laney." Harry says, pointing in my direction. I furrow my eyebrows, placing the pizza pan onto the island, walking around it so I was stood directly in front of Harry.
"Me? What could she want with me?" I asked as Anne appeared beside Harry.
"Beyond me. Something concerning Noelle. She said she's outside. If you'll just allow me to take a quick tequila shot I'll be there in a-"
"Harry!" I heard my voice and Anne's say at once, her crossing her arms over her chest and me furrowing my eyebrows at him.
"What? I'm sure neither of you would refuse alcohol to get through an encounter with Harper." He said easily, and I could tell by the glint in his eyes he was being playful.
His mother thought otherwise, "You act like an adult and go get them." She said, giving his shoulder a shove and causing Harry to stumble forward towards the foyer.
Anne shook her head, muttering under her breath, before heading back to the sink where she began washing what looked like basil. I followed her lead, grabbing a bowl from the cabinet. I could faintly hear the door opening and closing and some conversation happening, until I heard someone stumble, muttering an 'oops' before there were two little hands grabbing up towards me. I glance down quickly, setting down the bowl before fitting my hands into her armpits, lifting Noelle up easily.
"Hi Nana!" She said once she locked her legs around my waist. Anne waved a hand in greeting, pressing a kiss to her cheek as she walked past us to the fridge. She short stopped herself though, and walked back over to us, wiping at Noelles cheeks.
"Were you crying, love?" She questioned, and now glancing at her closer, she did seem to have dried tear tracks on her chubby cheeks. Noelle shrugs, nodding.
"Yeah it hurt." She said starting to squirm a bit in my arms so I placed her down.
"What did?" I questioned. She began to open her mouth, but Harry rushed into the room, Harper jogging behind him.
