"She is so silly, Laney. So silly." Noelle says from her spot below me, munching on her popcorn.
"And why is that?" I question, barely glancing up from my notepad, where I was doodling silently, seeing Mulan one too many times to pay any real attention.
"She is running with scissors." She says, pointing towards the movie where Mulan was sprinting across the screen, a sword in her hand.
"It's a sword, love. But still, don't run with it." I said, laughing lightly, glancing at the carpet, "Hey, Noelle. Popcorn kernels everywhere bug." She scrunched her face at my nickname for her. A teacher of mine used to call me that, and I liked it, even though Noelle explained to me the other day that she was not an insect.
"I bet Mulan didn't have to clean up her mess." She says as she gets onto her knees, out of her bright purple chair to grab the food that was on the ground.
"You win a war for Great Britain, and no more cleaning up." I say, grinning as she narrows her eyes towards me, continuing to clean.
It was about 6 pm on my first Friday in the house, and Harry had been basically locked in his office since late last night. Noelle was just getting up this morning as I saw him emerging from his office to head towards his bedroom, giving both of us a weak wave, until his bedroom door shut and I thought I heard him moan once his body hit the bed. Now I could hear him moving above us rapidly, heading towards the stairs.
"Bugger." I heard him shout, and one of his shoes came flying down the staircase into view.
"Swear jar!" Noelle shouted back.
"I created the swear jar, I don't contribute to it." Harry responded easily, appearing into view. He was a bit more dressed up than usual, a dark brown jacket thrown over a gray t-shirt, his usual black jeans on as well, complete with the holes in the knees, with his scuffed up boots, one of which he was slipping his foot into.
"I'm going to a record company party with a bunch of important people, which means they'll talk my ear off for at least 3 hours." He says to me as Noelle runs at him and he scoops her up easily, allowing her to move like a monkey onto his back.
I nodded, "I'm just going to put her to bed once the movie is over." I said, reaching over the couch to pause it.
"No you're not!" Noelle said, appearing and placing her head onto Harry's shoulder. He turned his head to see her.
"Yes, she is. You have to get up earlier than usual tomorrow. Your mum is taking you to see Grandma and Grandpa." Harry said, patting Noelle on her back side easily.
She gasped, "And Auntie Gem?!"
Harry shook his head, "No love. Grandma and Grandpa Clarke. Not my parents." He says, placing her back onto the ground.
Noelle rolls her eyes, "They don't like me. And they're mean to you." She said to Harry quietly, and I think I was getting a bit more family dynamic than I should, so I headed to the kitchen, pulling out my phone to text Emma a bit. She had asked me if Harry was ready yet earlier, and I didn't know what she was talking about, so I ignored it. Now that I knew he was heading out, I responded that he was ready to leave now, and she got back to me quickly.
'What is he wearing?'
I typed back, 'Holey Jeans, brown suede jacket, ugly boots and a t-shirt'
It was maybe a minute before she started calling me just as I was about to start the dishes.
"Yes, Emma?" I asked sweetly as I started rinsing the plates so it was easier for the dishwasher to clean them.
"Change him." She said loudly, and I heard her moving around a lot in the background.
