"All right, Phil. Okay buddy." Louie said as he lifted one of his best friends onto one of the two little yellow rafts that we had for such emergencies as this.

Mac and I helped lift him up before Mac helped Louie onto the rafts.

I sat on my knees on the empty raft, I breathed shallowly as I looked at the wreckage.

My hand covered my mouth as I thought about the veterans that we lost, but then something else came to mind.

My hand dropped to my side as my lips parted, looking at the blue water, as far as I could see in all directions.

"Hey," Louie spoke from behind me and I turned quickly, I looked to see Mac bandaging Phil's head as Louie stepped into the raft I was in.

"You're bleeding." Louie spoke softly, I look down to see my left hand covered in red liquid.

He sat in front of me after grabbing the first aid kit.

"Pillsbury didn't make it." Mac spoke as he kept pressure on Phil's wound.

I winced as Louie wiped the blood off the side of my hand where he found a long gash.

"Glassman didn't make it." Mac spoke again.

"Don't think about it, Mac." Louie looked up at our gunner.

"We're gonna die." Mac wouldn't stop.

"No, we're not, Mac." Louie said finishing up my bandage.

"They don't know where we are." Mac, the persistent pessimist.

"They'll find us." Louie said gently holding my left hand in his still, "They'll never see us." Mac spoke loudly.

"Tell him to shut up." Phil joined the conversation, "Shut up, Mac." Louie sighed.

"We're gonna die out here." Mac spoke, in a bit of a panic.

"Come on, Mac, shut up." Louie said one last time before Mac finally gave in, not saying anything more.

Louie's hand slipped away from mine as he looked through the emergency rations.

"Hey, chocolate. One square at night, one square in the morning. All right?" Louie said and I nodded as I sat back against the short walls of the raft.

"Mac? Two or three sips a day, yeah?" Louie said directly to Mac, knowing he might not play by the rules.

"We gotta make it last." Louie nodded with some water containers in his hand.

He sighed as he put them away, he sat down beside me he rest his elbow on his knee and his head in his hand.

He closed his eyes for a second probably thinking about home.

"Louie." I spoke quietly, his eyes opened and he looked over at me, "Yeah?"

"I'm glad it's you." I said with a small smile, because if I were to be stuck on raft in the ocean with anyone, I'd want it to be Louie Zamperini.

"I'm glad it's me, too." He slightly smirked.

-

I woke up to the feeling of fingers on my neck, I opened my eyes to see Louie setting up on his elbows in the pale moonlight, as he checked my pulse.

"Hey, I'm okay." I whispered so I didn't wake up the others.

He sighed heavily before laying next to me again, while Mac and Phil shared the second raft, but the rafts were tied together so we didn't drift apart.

"You're freezing, is what you are." Louie said with his face in close proximity to mine.

"Yeah, I can't deny that." I said because even if it was warm and sunny in the daytime, at night it was chilly.

We heard Mac gasp, "What was that?" He said and we sat up to see him sitting up.

The rafts felt like something or someone bumped into them twice.

All three of us stared at two separate fins circled us.

I breathed shallowly, scared of these creatures that would like to eat us as a midnight snack.

"Come on, go back to sleep. They can't hurt us in here." Louie whispered and I looked at him with worry.

I slowly laid back down in the snug spot because these rafts weren't all that spacious.

Louie laid on his side so we faced each other, "Come here." He spoke in the softest of tones, he slowly wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close.

I was cradled in his chest, and even with the Sharks bumping into our dainty rafts, I felt safe. I felt like Louie would protect me.

--

"Louie, Louie!" I woke him up suddenly, "Grab the flare gun, I'll get the dye." I spoke quickly as he got up to see what I was freaking out about.

He got the gun, shot up two flares trying to get the planes attention, I used the dye to turn the water bright green.

Louie and Mac both shouted at the plane before it left our sights.

Phil sighed as he held his head.

Mac held his head in his hands as I sat down again, I watched Louie as he looked at something and then looked at Mac before grabbing something in Mac's raft.

"What did you do, Mac? Huh?" Louie said as he held the wrappers of the chocolate in his hands.

I sat up straight as I realized what Mac had done.

"It doesn't matter." Mac shrugged.

"It doesn't matter?" Louie stood up and threw the wrappers at Mac, "It doesn't matter?" Louie said before he sat down by me.

I put my hand on his wrist, he exhaled deeply as held his face in one hand and my hand in the other.

I sighed as I rested my head back, wondering what could go wrong next.
