I watched as Zamperini took a break that didn't even last two second before a guard grabbed him and pulled him away from the loading dock.
He stumbled as the man who was healthy walked faster than the beaten, broken and underfed soldier.
His basket fell to the ground before the guard made him stand in front of a pile of lumber.
"No, no, no." I heard someone whisper beside me, I looked over to see Deja Golde watching in fear as we stood on the ramp.
We walked down and half the camp stared as Watanabe yelled at Zamperini to pick up a piece of lumber.
He barely could drag it with his weak muscles and hurt leg.
Watanabe shouted at him twice, telling him to lift the lumber.
Deja covered her mouth as Louie struggled but then put it on his shoulders.
"Over your head." Watanabe demanded, never letting up on the poor guy.
He miraculously lifted it over his head, we overheard Watanabe command one of the guards that if he dropped it, he would be shot.
Deja dropped her basket and tried to go to him but I grabbed her arm, "Fitzgerald, please, sir." She begged as she looked back at me.
"You'll both be killed if I let you go." I spoke.
"I can't let him die." She spoke with tears in her eyes.

It was sunset and I made Deja stay close to me throughout the whole day.
The whole camp was watching now, there were times when he would nearly fall but he would catch himself before.
"Come on, Louie." I whispered, my grip loosened on Deja and she bolted, I tried to grab her but she ran across the quiet yard.

The guards yelled at Deja as she ran towards me, "Deja, you can't do this, you'll be killed." I spoke weakly, still holding the beam on my shoulders.
"I won't let you die." She slightly shook her head before turning her attention to Watanabe.
She stared him down, he told her to not look at him.
Her hands shook as she looked at him, her chest rising and falling heavily.
He shouted at her in Japanese to look away from him, and she understood Japanese, she just didn't obey his order.
Watanabe made his guard put the gun down before he yelled at Deja, he ran towards her and struck her down.
I almost dropped the pole before I looked at Watanabe, my anger boiling over.
Deja laid on the ground how she fell, unconscious or maybe even dead, she did just get hit in the head.
I breathed deeply as I lifted the beam as far as I could, my arms outreached.
I shouted before I threw the beam and it landed by Watanabe's feet, I fell to my knees as I held up Deja's limp head.
I felt that bamboo stick strike my head, making me fall over.
Watanabe started beating me with it until he threw it away, and started using his own hands.
He hit me, punched me, and kicked me.
As I laid on the ground, being kicked in the side repeatedly- memories flashed in my mind.
I saw the palm trees and hills of California, I was running along the streets of California, right by the beach.
I turned my head to see Deja's blonde hair in a messy ponytail, she looked back at me with a large smile as she rode her bike with no hands.
I laughed as she spread out her arms, putting her head back towards the sun, as I ran shirtless next to her.
She looked back at me with an infectious smile, I opened my eyes, back into reality.
I breathed deeply as Watanabe stood over me before he fell to his knees, crying.
I focused on the girl beside me, my eyesight was faded as I looked at her, her face pointed towards mine.
I couldn't tell if she was alive or not, and I wasn't sure if I'd be alive much longer so I took her hand and held it in mine before everything went black.
A/N Deja in his memories 😍😍 (you'll get to know more about their high school relationship in chapters to come,)
