A small girl stood beside her mother, nervously waiting for the school bus. Today would be her first day of kindergarten. She stood quietly, both anxious and excited. On one hand, she was terrified to meet her new classmates, but at the same time she desperately wanted to learn. Nothing in particular sparked her interest, the girl was just curious about everything.
She looked around, noticing that the sun was glinting off of something. The small rectangle of paper had a cartoon picture of a school bus on it. Underneath that her name, Lena was spelled out crisply sharpie.
Her mother began to speak to her, telling her about how much she loved her and how she was going to love school. Lena nodded along, not paying all that much attention to the information and reassurance. There were other things to focus on; so many things in the world were exciting.
As she continued to look around she felt her stress about her soon to be classmates begin to rise again. What if they were mean? She wondered if they could really be that bad. People never were that bad, right?
A large yellow bus with the number 42 pulled up on the street, and the strict looking old woman driving opened the door. Lena repressed her fear and focused on her pink and green bag. For some reason the butterfly pattern soothed her, and her excitement returned. Now hyper, she picked up her backpack and got on the bus, ready for the day.
