By nightfall they'd found an abandoned barn to hide out in, and Anna was sitting dejectedly on a bale of hay, staring into space. Karoline paced the barn, trying to come up with another game plan. "We still got the hex bags," Dean said. "I say we head back to the panic room."
"What, forever?" Ruby asked sarcastically.
"I'm just thinking out loud!" Dean snapped.
"Oh, you call that thinking?"
"Hey! Hey, hey, hey. Stop it," Alayna said, frowning at the demon.
"Anna's grace is gone. You understand? She can't angel up," Ruby pointed out. "She can't protect us. We can't fight Heaven and Hell. One side maybe, but not both. Not at once."
"Um... guys?" Anna interrupted, looking at them. "The angels are talking again." Karoline stopped pacing and tuned in, trying to connect to the angelic line that had been deadly silent for the last few days. She was right.
"What are they saying?" Sam asked.
"It's weird... like a recording... a loop. It says..." Anna paused, listening and Karoline heard it at the same time, the words taking her breath away. "Dean Winchester gives us Anna by midnight, or...." She stopped, looking over at the blonde.
"Or what?" Dean asked.
"...or we hurl him back to damnation," Karoline finished, her breath catching in her throat. Karoline closed her eyes, willing back the panic that was threatening to overtake her. Dean's mouth fell open in disbelief while Sam and Alayna startled at the words Karoline had relayed, moving into action.
"Anna... do you know of any weapon that works on an angel?" Sam asked.
"To what? To kill them?" Anna asked, and Sam nodded. "Nothing we could get to... not right now," she replied.
"Okay, wait, wait, wait," Dean said, holding out his hand as Karoline sat down hard on a bale of hay behind her, bringing all her training to the front and pushing the despair, the worry, the panic to the back of her mind.
"I say we call Bobby. We get him back from hedonism," Dean said, walking over closer to them. "Or maybe Tom."
"Dean, what're they going to tell us that we don't already know?" Alayna asked, lifting her head up to look at him.
"I don't know, but we got to think of something!" Dean snapped, his eyes starting to look just as panicked as they were feeling.
"He's right," Sam said, nodding. "We gotta come up with a plan, and a damn good one."
Dean didn't like the way things were going, not one damn bit, but it wasn't like they had a lot of choices. He had to get away for a bit, so he took the book he was reading along with a light, and found himself resting against the trunk of the Impala, light illuminating the words on the page, though he was barely taking in the information contained there. Karoline walked over to him as well, a small smile on her face and leaning against the car beside him. "Hey, are you okay?"
"Well, I might get sent back to Hell tonight, just peachy." Karoline's frowned deepened at his bitter tone taking his hand in hers.
"Hey," She called his attention and he looked over at her. "It's not going to happen." Dean opened his mouth to respond, but she continued before he could. "They went through all that trouble to save you, like five Angels died trying to get you out."
Dean frowned, "How did you..."
"I get the newsletter," She half joked earning a smile from the Winchester. "They didn't go through all that trouble to save you just to throw you back in over one Angel."
