Winter break was finally here, and I couldn't be happier. I had so many things planned for me and Shawn to do, and I was 100% sure we were going to go through all of them. The first day though, we decided to just relax and walk around downtown, looking at all the Christmas lights and decorations. Shawn even wanted to see Santa.
"Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas!" Santa said, as he saw Shawn walking towards him. "H-Hi!" Shawn stuttered. He looked over at me and whispered/yelled, "I haven't seen Santa since I was 9, Amara!" He had the biggest smile on his face. He sat down on Santa's lap. "So, what would you like for Christmas, Shawn?" He chuckled, his beard moving as he spoke. Shawn started whispering something in his ear. I tried to get as close as I can before tripping over this huge sleigh sitting in front of me. What was he telling Santa?
After he was done, he walked back over to me and we both took a picture with him. It turned out really cute.
We just kind of walked around the mall a bit after that, looking at all the little kids running around in toy stores, and teenage girls buying each other presents. Shawn kept smiling at me throughout the whole day, making me wonder what he told "Santa" even more. I caught him once when I was looking at these pearl earrings in a jewelry store. "Why are you staring at me?" I started blushing, asking him. I wrapped my arms around his neck and he wrapped his around my waist. He pulled me closer, looking into my eyes. "Because you're beautiful." He whispered. I started blushing even more, kissing him on the cheek. "I love you." I took his hand in mine. We continued to walk around the mall. "Hey Amara?" I looked at him. "Hmm?" I could smell peppermint in the air, making me smile. I couldn't wait for Christmas. "What do you want for Christmas?" He said, looking curiously at me. "What? Shawn I don't want anything! I just want you here." I looked at him. "Come on, you must want something." He looked at his feet. "Yeah well all I want is for you to be here for Christmas, so we can be together okay?" He smiled. "Nod the real question is, what do you want for Christmas?" I looked at him. "Oh very funny, baby. I already told Santa what I want." He smirked. I wanted to know what he said to him so bad now, just wanting to ask him. So I did, but at the right time.
With our hands intertwined, we walked around the outdoor mall, looking at things along the way. "AMARA!" He shouted. "SHAWN!" I imitated him, laughing. "That restaurant is where we had our anniversary! Remember, in grade 10?" He pointed to this small fancy restaurant sitting at the end of the road. It was lit up with fairy lights and looked really romantic. I remembered that night so clearly. It was the day he gave me the promise ring. "Let's go." He turned to me, bringing out clasped hands up to our shoulders. "What? Right now?!" I was surprised. "Yeah of course! It will bring back so many memories, babe." He smiled sweetly at me. "Okay..." I said very slowly. We walked over to the restaurant, got a seat immediately, and ordered drinks.
"This place hasn't changed a bit." I sigh, looking around and stirring my iced tea. "I know, everything is coming back." He looked at me. I started playing with my promise ring as memories flooded my mind. When he knelt down on one knee, pulling out the ring. The words he said are engraved into my mind, probably just as much as his initials are engraved into his new guitar. I smiled at him.
~an hour later~
We were eating dessert, telling each other the cheesiest jokes we've ever heard. It was a good day. But it was about to get even better. I was caught up in the moment, thinking I could say and do anything.
"Shawn, what did you ask "Santa" for?" I used finger quotations as I said it. He smiled at me and started blushing. "Nothing." He looked down. "Babe I know you, and I know how you act. You can't lie to me, you know." I smiled at his effort. "Fine," he started.
"I asked him to keep you safe, and to keep you real." He said, really fast. "What? Keep me real?" I giggled. "Yeah, you know, like keep you yourself, not anyone else. Like keeping you positive, but also smart. And I want that for you. I want you to be safe, I want us to be forever. Does that make sense?"
He was playing nervously with a napkin on the table. "I love you." I reached over the table, taking his hand in mine, stopping him from playing with the napkin. "I love you." He smiled at me. I started blushing, "And yes, it does make sense."
