Tessa's POV

"Do you know how late Jay and Jessie went to sleep?" I asked Brent and then answered my question before giving him a chance to guess at least. "Two o'clock this morning," I groaned and took a sip of my coffee.

"Wow even I can't stay up that late anymore," Brent replied and I chuckled.

Brent and I agreed to meet up for lunch today and we had ample amount of time before we had to go back to our jobs. We were sitting outside of a small café and the temperature was so hot today!

Brent was having a burger and fries while I just had fries alone and coffee.

Yes.

Coffee is the new water to me. I was so tired and I needed something to keep me going just for a few more hours.

"So what are you doing this weekend?" Brent questioned, popping a fry into his mouth.

I pouted, thinking if I had any plans. "Nothing that I know of."

"Jay and Jessie are into animals?"

"They both love my dog back home," I offered.

"Why don't we take them to the zoo this weekend?" he suggested.

"My mom took them last week, remember?"

"They haven't gone with Uncle Brent," he pointed out.

"Alright sure," I replied agreeing with his idea.

I loved the way that he was with Jay and Jessieand they liked him as well. Since Saturday, I did not give Aline's and Iconversation much more thought but now, I was starting to think about it. Brent was definitely a great guy but I was not sure whether he wanted to pursue a relationship or just a friendship.

"A penny for your thoughts?" he flashed a smile at me from across the table.

"I was just thinking about how good you are with Jay and Jessie," I replied with only a portion of the truth.

"They are good kids," he complimented them and I couldn't help but smile at this.

"Saturday?" I suggested with a shrug.

"Yeah," he agreed. "I'm off this whole weekend."

I ate three fries before responding. "That's good."

Brent worked in the construction field but I'm not too sure of what exactly he specialized in.

"How's work?" he asked, making subtle conversation to drown out the silence.

"Good so far. I haven't had any complications today. What about you?" I responded and sipped on my coffee.

"It's tiring. I should have become a lawyer or an accountant so I wouldn't have to be standing up 24/7," he told me with a slight chuckle.

"Thank God you're not wearing heels," I pointed out and he nodded in agreement.

For work, Brent was dressed in light blue jeans and a grey checkered shirt accompanied by a pair of boots. Sure it sounded like an awful combination, however, it suited Brent.

"Hey," Brent said, catching my undivided attention. "There's something... I need to... tell you." Judging from his tone, he was hesitant to say it and he made it sound as though it wasn't good news.

"Is it bad news?" I asked, hoping that it was not.

"Depends on how you decide to take it," he said, looking at me with worry.

"I'm listening," I urged him to go on.

"You know what? Don't bother. It's not that important anymore," he dismissed with a wave of his hand. His eyes never met mine and he quickly ate some fries.

"No, Brent, what is it?" I asked, stretching across the table and holding his hand. This gesture definitely got him to look up at me and he gave my hand a small squeeze.

What he said next was somewhat unexpected.

"Tessa, I... I have feelings for you," he said straightforwardly and I froze.

The first thought that came to my head was:

Did Aline know this? *

After thinking this, it led me to my next thought.

Is that why she had that chat with me?

I had a feeling that the answer to both questions were yes.

Of course, I was not expecting this right now. I thought that it was going to be a simple yet nice lunch with Brent and then I go back to work but no. That was only what I expected. I was caught off guard and surprised by this news.

"Tessa," Brent waved his arms in front of me to get my attention.

"Yeah," I immediately answered and blinked twice.

"Is this good news or bad news?" he asked me.

I took a good while before I answered. I mean hello who wouldn't be shocked right now?

"I guess... it would be good news," I smiled at him and he beamed.

"So... would you go on a date with me?" he asked, his smile never leaving his face.

"Of course," I gave the obvious answer. "I'm not too sure when I'll have time for myself-"

"Don't worry about that," he stopped me. "We don't have to go immediately so when you get time let me know and we'll go," he said understanding my situation with having to take care of my kids.

That was what I liked most about him. Brent was an understanding person and I couldn't help but feel like I was doing the right thing by telling him yes.

After Brent and I parted our ways, I walked down the street back to work. I took the back entrance to the office and entered the narrow hallway. My office was the second door on the right and as soon as I opened the door, I saw that I was late. Looking at the clock on the wall to the left of my desk, I was 10 minutes late.

Picking up the phone, I paged the secretary, "Cyrus, can you send in the next patient?"

There was a soft beep before the 23 year old man replied, "Of course and I will send him in with his file since I was too lazy to put it in your office."

I only chuckled at his response because this was typical Cyrus.

I sat in the chair and organized my desk a little before the patient could enter. With my pen held in my right hand, I was ready.

The door opened and the patient stepped in. Except this wasn't my patient.

This was the last person I expected to see walking through that door.

It was Jamie.
