1 year later.
AJ was only 5 and he was in the 2nd grade. His teachers were really impressed by what he could do at such a young age that people in the academic world starting calling him a scientific prodigy. AJ really didn’t know what they were talking about all he knew is he really liked rocks and the outdoors. Many of his teachers were proud, but no one could be more proud than Kurt and Blaine. Blaine was extremely proud and made a big deal out of it taking AJ outside for 2 weeks asking him questions that seemed very complex to Blaine, but so simple of AJ. Kurt would tell Blaine that he would never be able to understand AJ. Whenever someone asked AJ how he knew so much AJ replied with something like, “I basically watched the history channel whenever the science shows came on and would think about what they were discovering and would make my own hypothesis.” Then AJ would grin from all of the attention.
It was AJ’s first day of 2nd grade and he was beyond nervous He might be advanced in science, but he was terrible at mathematics. He was okay at English and was pretty good in history. AJ was 2 years younger than all of the other kids, and had no friends in this grade besides his sister which he loved her and all, but that didn’t count for much; siblings were kind of guaranteed friends.
AJ sighed and looked at the classroom door, now or never, he thought. AJ opened the door and quickly found his seat trying hard not trying to draw to much attention. But this burly looking boy walked up to him. “What are you doing in here pipsqueak I thought you were supposed to be in kindergarten where the rest of you stupid children played?” This strange boy said menacingly.
“I was moved up because of how good I am at science.”
The boy looked AJ before grunting and returning to his seat with all of his friends. AJ looked at the bunch and quickly decided he didn’t want to get to know them to well. They seemed like big jerk faces. Then suddenly a boy with dirty blonde hair came over and sat by AJ.
AJ stared at him with a confused expression. Why did this boy sit by him? The boy turned and looked at him with bright baby blue eyes. This made AJ feel funny inside, which confused AJ because he knew a lot about the human body and how it works. This boy seemed to gather enough courage to finally say, “Don’t worry about those boys, they always give me trouble.”
AJ once again felt that funny feeling. This boy’s voice was like smooth butter even better. AJ would really have to ask one of his dads about this stuff. Maybe they would know, right? AJ was never rude so he replied to the boy, “What do you mean?”
“They give me trouble because I moved here last year. I come from California and sometime I wish I could go back, but my dad got a good job offer here so we moved. I love Seattle and all, but it is not home.”
“I know how you feel.”
The boy looked at him with disbelief.
“I come from New York. And apparently I am some kind of prodigy in science, but I just don’t understand I really just like rocks and the outdoors, not chemicals, but they moved me up anyway.” AJ supplied.
“That really sucks, but I really like smart people.” The boy said. The boy looked at him with sorrow in his eyes, “My name is Gavin.”
AJ liked the name Gavin, he now could put a name to a face and that felt good. “AJ is my name; shortened for Austin James.”
“I like the name AJ.” Gavin said with happiness.
Their conversation was soon ended when the teacher walked up to the front of the room. ”Hello class my name is Ms. Kingston, so I thought for a way for us to get to know each other better, we would play a game with a ball that we pass at each other and we tell a little about ourselves. So let’s get started.”
Everyone stood up and began with a girl named Marianne who had dark brown hair. They learned that she loved drawing and writing stories for her dad. Marianne passed the ball to a boy and the cycle continued. When the big burly boy got the boy the learned his name was Andrew and that Andrew liked cars and hunting. AJ thought shocker sarcastically. The burly boy, Andrew, threw the ball at AJ hitting him in the face making AJ stop thinking. AJ reluctantly picked up the ball holding the tears in from how bad that hurt.
“Hello crowd my name is AJ shortened from Austin James and I love rocks and the outdoors. My favorite color is magenta and I have a bigger sister in the same grade.” Gavin looked at AJ with a smile. AJ handed the ball to Gavin who stood up.
“Hello my name is Gavin and I love reading and math. My favorite activity is watching television while coloring.” Gavin sat down quickly and lightly threw the ball towards a blonde girl whose name was Kelly.
When the activity of getting to know you was done the children were allowed to go to recess making everyone giddy. Gavin grabbed AJ’s arm pulling him to the sandbox where no one ever went. AJ giggled by the way Gavin acted towards him.
Gavin finally spoke up after a long peaceful silence drifted between them. “AJ… you say you are really smart at science, could you show me please?”
“Sure.” AJ replied.
For the rest of the recess period AJ explained to an interested Gavin about how sand was formed. Gavin found that part the most interesting due to him living on the coast. When recess ended they went to lunch and sat together by themselves talking about each other.
When the day came to a close both children were sad, but glad to have made a friend on their first day of 2nd grade. When AJ was picked up Gavin gave him a quick peck of the lips to AJ’s cheek which made AJ blush with embarrassment. Gavin said goodbye and entered his parent’s black SUV. AJ did the same and was soon bombarded by his daddy Blaine with loads of questions about how did his first day of 2nd grade go and why a boy kissed him on the cheek, sufficed to say Blaine was not happy that some little creepy boy made a move onto his 5 year old son, but AJ looked rather happy about it.
Blaine sighed knowing that these car trips were starting to embarrass him more than anything so he quickly shut his mouth and turned on the radio station to a pop channel. Both Blaine and AJ hummed along while they waited for Kimmie to stop talking to Huy. Blaine sighed with the thought of ‘They are growing up way to fast.’ He would have to tell Kurt about the peck not wanting to hear the panic that conversation would bring.
The drive home was long and tiring with the thought of Kurt freaking out, but oh well what are husbands for? They got out of the car the minute they pulled into the driveway.
Blaine was correct. That night Kurt freaked out about his children being too old for their age and calling himself old. But after midnight they both were able to finally go to sleep with the thoughts about how at least they both knew their children were at least happy.
