"I don't understand."
With a roll of my eyes, I shift on my feet and bury my hands deeper into the pockets of my denim jacket. My hands make the front of the jacket move closer together to keep myself a little bit warmer. The weather had dropped a few degrees from yesterday and was in the low fifties.
Steve stands in front of us with his back to one of the walls of the building we are standing between. He gawks at Nancy, confused. "You went back to my house?"
"To look for Barb." Nancy states with one hand on her bag.
I rock back and forth on my heels until I lean far enough to let my back rest against the brick wall, opposite of Steve.
"Yeah, okay, but why didn't you just talk to me? That's crazy." Steve shoves his hands into the pockets of his pants. He briefly glances in my direction before settling his attention back onto my sister.
Nancy shrugs, uncertainly, "I don't know. We were scared."
"You seriously think you saw a guy in a mask just hanging out in my yard?"
I press my lips together. I side glance at my sister before saying, "We don't think it was a mask."
Whatever that thing was in the woods didn't look human. It just happened so fast that Nancy and I aren't completely sure what we say, but we know that it wasn't a mask. It was like he didn't have a face. The creature reminded me of something that belonged in a horror movie or a story.
"But he had no face?" Steve doubts me with a raise of his eyebrow.
"I don't know!" Nancy bursts with an exasperated sigh. Her lips press together in a thin line to match mine and she glimpses at me. "We don't know-"
"We just have a terrible feeling about this." I push off of the wall to stand beside my sister.
Steve's eyes dart between the two of us. A worried look crosses his face as he takes a couple of steps backwards until his back hits the other brick wall. "Oh, this is bad." He shakes his head. "This is really bad."
Nancy steps forward, "What?"
"The cops," Steve explains.
I breathe hot air out of my nostrils at his answer. Of course. Pretty boy is worried about what the cops will do after they find out about the beers at his party. Steve is more worried about himself right now. He doesn't even care that our best friend is missing.
"They're gonna want to talk to all of us now. Tommy, Carol- everybody who was at the party." He goes into further explanation.
"So?"
I fold my arms over my chest, glaring at him, "Pretty Boy is worried about what his parents are going to do when they find out about the party."
Steve narrows his eyes at me, "My parents are gonna murder me!" He raises his voice.
Nancy's mouth falls open in disbelief. "Are you serious right now?" She turns her head to the right to see if I'm believing what her so-called-boyfriend is saying right now.
"You don't understand." Steve rests his left hand on his side while leaning against the wall. "My dad's a grade-A asshole."
"Now, I know where you get it from." I mumble under my breath. A smirk settles upon my face when I realize that Steve heard what I had to say.
"Barb is missing!" Nancy tells him, annoyed. "And you're worried about your dad?"
Steve steps away from the wall. "Okay, just- When you talk to the cops, just- Don't mention the beers."
