"Everything is Grey."
Almost a week had passed since Alex's encounter with Miles. Alex had resumed his normal day to day tasks. Class, Starbucks, and reading History textbooks for fun. However, he couldn't help but feel as if his life was becoming an endless cycle of mundane activities.
Thursday afternoon he met up with Matt and their friend Van for a cup of coffee. When Alex entered the crowded campus Starbucks he spotted his friends sitting at their usual spot, chatting amongst themselves. Once Alex approached the table and plopped down in the chair, he didn't as much as utter a word before Van raised an eyebrow.
"Dude, what's up?"
Van asked before he took a sip of a drink that looked way too sugary sweet to be normal, but that was Van for you. Both of Alex's friends had their weird habits and quirks, but that's what made them such a good trio. They always had each other's backs and they never judged Alex when he came out of the closet as being gay, a few years back.
Alex chuckled as he stabbed the bright green straw through the lid on his beverage, he took a sip and savored the feeling of the cold liquid against his tongue before he answered his friend.
"What do you mean?"
Van rolled his eyes playfully, knowing Alex all too well he could easily pick up on his mood based on nothing but his mannerisms.
"Usually you come in here and instantly begin talking about some history bull--"
Alex gave Van a look and Van corrected himself.
"Topics.... anyway, I can't seem to shut you up after your history class but today you're quiet as can be."
Matt nodded in agreement. He looked up from his phone to look at Van and then at Alex, raising his eyebrow at them both.
"I actually agree with Van here for once."
He chuckled, playfully nudging his blue-eyed friend in the ribs.
Van rolled his eyes in response and then his eyes went back to Alex, eagerly waiting for a reply.
Now that both of his friends were staring at him waiting for the truth, Alex had no choice but to give it to them.
"Well, honestly I just feel like my life is so mundane, boring, the same old shit."
He went back to sipping his drink, watching his friends for their responses.
Matt laughed.
"No shit... You don't do anything but read history books. Not much changes in those, I mean that's all in the past, man."
Alex sighed, knowing Matt was right. History always felt like home to him and his dream to become a professor was never going to change. That didn't mean that he couldn't step outside of his comfort zone, right?
Seemingly lost in his own thoughts he didn't notice that Van's blue eyes widened until he heard an exasperated sigh.
"OH, this is about that guy, isn't it? Miles right?"
Van looked at Matt who shook his head with a laugh.
Suddenly, Alex's friends were laughing and shaking their heads.
"I should have known a guy got you all bent out of shape, Al," Van smirked.
Alex felt his cheeks heat up in embarrassment. It wasn't often that he got a crush. College guys tended to be immature and Alex always felt like he was mature beyond his years. He wanted someone on his same mental level, thus why he always tended to like older guys.
