Prologue:

Kayla sat at their usual table outside the cafe. She looked at the time on her phone - 11:03. He was late again, as usual. A small, bittersweet smile appeared across her face.

“Hey there, Kay,” a handsome, hazel eyed, brown haired boy greeted his beautiful brown haired, grey eyed girlfriend. He leaned down to kiss her, but she pulled away. Confused, he sat down.

“What did you want?” he asked finally, when she didn’t speak.

“I’m breaking up with you,” Kayla told him coldly, emotionlessly.

Pain, anger, hopelessness and sadness shone in Ian’s hazel eyes. “What? Why?” he asked, his voice steady. He kept his tone low, so they wouldn’t cause a commotion.

Kayla looked at him with hate-filled eyes, “I’m getting tired of this.”

“Of what?” Ian snapped, anger rising quickly, “Of giving me charity? I told you when I first met you what you’d be dealing with.”

“I know. I didn’t realise that you would be this bad,” Kayla answered, stiffly.

Ian glared at her. “I thought we had something. Something special,” his voice broke near the end of his sentence. She hated herself at the moment, loathed herself. No one could hate her more that she hated herself.

Kayla met his eyes, unflinchingly, “You were just a fling to me. I never loved you.” Ian flinched.

He took a deep breath. “You know, I finally thought that my life was getting better. I thought that I had finally found someone who understood me. Someone who would be able to accept me for who I was. I guess I was wrong,” he said quietly.

“I guess so,” Kayla replied, equally as quiet. Ian walked away from her, not turning back once.

Kayla stared after him, a lone tear traveling down her face, her eyes filled with the same hate as before, but it was directed at herself, not him. She wished that he had shouted at her, got mad at her. It would have made it easier. Instead, he had spoken to her calmly, his quiet tone anguished and it took all of Kayla’s self control not to comfort him. She felt other tears threatening to fall, so she quickly wiped away the tear, picked up her bag and left the cafe. Now it was time to continue her mission.

She ran into an alleyway and pulled off her t-shirt, quickly putting on a black thermal. She already had her black mission pants, which were basically black tights, on and she exchanged her brown combat boots for black, knee high boots. This outfit was the standard mission outfit for girls. In addition to this, she also pulled her hair under a beanie and put on thin gloves. She climbed up the drainage pipe on the side of the building. At the top she looked around, making sure that there was no one there. Quickly, she moved towards the skylight in the middle of the roof. Checking that there was no one there, she used her pocket knife to open the skylight. Silently, Kayla willed herself to stop thinking of Ian.

Lowering herself in, Kayla found herself standing in a messy office. She plugged a USB into the computer, then started looking through the documents. Finding nothing important there, she started looking through the many drawers. Kayla pursed her lips. There was nothing useful in there either. She frowned, then checked the USB. It had finished downloading all of the files from the computer. Kayla took it out and opened the door. Instead of a passageway, she met a staircase. Quietly, she walked down, hoping that no one was home.

“Hey! You there stop!” a voice shouted.

“Damn,” Kayla cursed under her breath. She looked at them. It was a bodyguard, easy to take down. She slid down the railing of the stairs and made sure to land on top of him. The wind was knocked out of him and a few ribs were broken. “Sorry,” she said, dragging him to the side and walking on. She saw that the stairs were almost right opposite the front door, so she quickly turned the corner. It was dark. All the windows were shut and the blinds closed and only a few lamps had been turned on.

Unfortunately for her, there was a whole crowd downstairs in the lounge. She quickly pressed herself against the wall, hoping they hadn’t seen her. The front door opened at that moment and Kayla moved silently into the shadows before staying still. The person who had just entered walked straight past her. She breathed a sigh of relief. She walked past the lounge, still in the shadows. Entering the kitchen/dining room, Kayla looked through the cabinet. She found some documents on the Degars’ deals and recent receipts and stuffed them into her bag.

“Move and I’ll kick you so hard, you won’t be able to sit down for a week,” hissed a menacing female voice. Kayla froze. Inconspicuously, she moved her hand, so that she was able to grab the shirt of her attacker. She pulled hard and slipped out of their grip. Turning to face them, she saw that her attacker was Meghan, the daughter of the people she was spying on.

“You!” Meghan cried. Quickly, Kayla covered her mouth, but it was too late. Meghan’s cry had attracted the attention of her brother, Logan. He ran into the room and Kayla quickly kicked Meghan off her feet. She moved towards Logan. “Ian! Ian Parker! He’s her boyfriend!” Meghan yelled, while getting up. Kayla felt the panic rising in her chest.

“He’s not my boyfriend anymore,” Kayla said calmly. Mentally, she crossed her fingers, praying that they would leave Ian alone.

“Yeah right,” Meghan answered, “Anyone could tell that you two were in love.”

Kayla looked Meghan straight in the eye. “I’m not!” Meghan gave her brother a look. Logan quickly ran out of the room, Kayla hot on his heels.

They ran, almost side by side, to Ian’s house.

“So, darling,” Logan panted, “Looks like the spy has a weakness.”

“No chance,” Kayla hissed back, pushing herself to run faster to get to Ian. She tried to kick Logan, but he jumped out of her way.

Logan matched her speed, but kept his distance so that he wouldn’t be within kicking range, “When I find your little boyfriend, he’s going to suffer so bad. I’m going to make you watch him suffer. Hmm, maybe I’ll cut off his fingers if you refuse to give us information.”

The panicked feeling rose again. “Don’t. You. Dare. Touch. Him,” Kayla ground out.

“You’re not in a position to make threats, sweetie,” Logan said, smirking. Kayla quickly spotted Ian as they kept running. She ran towards him, Logan a pace behind her. Smirking, he took out a gun. Kayla’s eyes widened. He came closer to her now. She watched as he pulled the trigger slowly, torturously, aiming at Ian.

He had a silencer on, so the noise would be reduced and the neighbours wouldn’t be disturbed. Quickly, Kayla watched his finger move. He pulled the trigger and she jumped in front of the bullet. Logan watched the scene unfold quickly before his eyes, then ran away before anyone could notice him. Kayla lay down in the middle of the road, in pain and gasping. She saw the hazel eyes that she loved looked at her anxiously before she fell into darkness.
