"I love you," Dustin said seriously.
"Dustin -" Marian sighed.
"No. Why didn't you tell me?" Dustin demanded.
"I didn't know!"
"Your soul mate is my best friend!" he argued.
"I didn't ask for it to happen. It just did. And from how you're taking the news," she scoffed, rolling her eyes at him. "I dodged a bullet." Dustin bit his lower lip, trying to control his emotions.
"I thought I was your soul mate, Mary," he said softly. Her eyes softened.
"So did I," she murmured. "We're both 17, Dustin. You'll find yours soon. Tomorrow, even."

He had dated Marian for almost three years, and they seemed like they were meant for each other. But she met his best friend - former best friend, Dustin corrected himself - and she left without a backward glance.
What does it matter? You don't want to fall in love anyway, he argued with himself.
