Kim massaged her temples, everything hurt. Christmas had come and gone and she was still trying to get a straight answer on Adam's whereabouts but she had serious doubts that she'd ever get an answer. The flu had made its way through the bullpen and she was the latest victim, it had hit her like a freight train.A pile of tissues had accumulated on her desk, she gathered them all and dumped them into the trash can at her feet. She had used the last of the package and reached into the bottom drawer to pull out one of the extra packages she had stashed away. She refused to use the tissues the CPD supplied, she'd rather not use tissues that felt like a step below sand paper.
An envelope caught her eye, it was buried beneath the packages of tissues. She'd recognize that chicken scratch anywhere, she felt her heart skip a beat.
How had she not found it sooner?
Adam rubbed the back of his neck, he was getting too old for this shit. Sleeping on the floor was much easier as a nineteen, twenty year old...he was twenty eight, which wasn't old at all...just not conducive to the festival life. They'd been sleeping in tents for the last week and half, and it was cold as fuck even in the mountains of northwest Georgia. Yep, he was traveling all over the US with this group. They had already gathered a lot of evidence but getting word to his liaison had been getting trickier as the days stretched on and he was growing concerned.
The fact that his partner wasn't all that convincing as one of the band's crew members wasn't helping at all, and there'd be a few times that he worried their cover was close to being blown.
Kim had tucked the envelope in one of the folders she had at her desk and snuck into the locker room, not the best place to read what she had found..but she didn't dare lock herself in the bathroom. It was the only bathroom the Intelligence unit used and she didn't want to have to explain herself to someone who needed to use it.
She couldn't wait until she got home...she needed to read it now.
Once she was sure the locker room was empty she locked the door and sat down. Her proximity to his locker didn't go unnoticed, she had gone to his locker as if she was on auto pilot.
She carefully opened it, and took a deep calming breath. Well, it was an attempt to be calming but it was anything but calming.
Dear Kim,
This is hard to do...hard to put down on paper...not when you deserve so much more than this. I'm going under for awhile...it's what's best for me..and by extension..you. I've been a dick to you..and I'm sorry. I won't try and justify my behavior because there is no justifying it..Just know that I'm truly sorry...I hope when I get back we can sit down and talk. Really talk.
Adam.
She could feel the tears as they slid down her cheeks, he was apologizing to her when she was the one who should be apologizing. She was the one who had ruined everything, she allowed other people to get in her head.
Why did they take so long to figure shit out?
For the first time in a long time, she felt hopeful.
"You need to calm the fuck down" Adam spoke through his teeth, they had just loaded up a van with what was supposed to be the band's instruments and while the van included the gear, it also housed numerous weapons in the hidden panels that had been built into the van.
"I am..I will" he sputtered, "It's all so confusing...I'm trying man."
Adam slammed the door shut, "Try harder man!"
