Rose's POV
I flipped a page on my notebook, scribbling furiously as I glanced back at forth from the lined page to my Algebra book that lay idly on the dining table.
When I was finished, I smiled proudly. Why couldn't Astronomy have been this easy? Or Divination? I'll be graduating from this muggle school before Christmas!
Which wasn't very far away.
"Having fun?" Hugo asked, his voice brimmed with amusement as he clomped down the stairs of the Burrow, leaping the last three steps and landing firm on his feet in front of me.
"Never been better," I chirped, actually meaning it. "I swear the amount of homework they give would easily suit a three-year old. I keep doing the extensions!"
"No surprise there," he said, taking the seat across from me. "Plus you have mine in case you get bored."
"Thank you, that is very much appreciated," I said with a mocking smile.
He laughed.
A sudden beep drew our attention to my cellphone (, a digital box used for communicating from one place to another,) that lay buzzing in the tabletop.
Curious, I turned it on to find a string of messages in the notification board, none of them very nice.
I kept my face expressionless as I shut it off again and and set it down on the seat next to me so I didn't have to look at it. Most muggles were quite obsessed with the cellphone, but that didn't mean I had to be.
"Are those girls giving you trouble again?" Hugo asked, staring intently at me.
"Why would you think that?"
He gave me a look.
I sighed, "Its fine, Hugo. I can handle a few name calling and such. It's not like I've never experienced it before."
"Yeah but before you had Albus and Roxanne and Fred and Lily -" an uneasy pause "- and me to help you out. Here in this dump truck muggle school you don't have anyone except me, and I'm still in Middle school."
"Hugo, just stop! You shouldn't be worrying you should be studying," I said and he gave a little snort. "Well, okay, that wasn't a very reasonable answer. But I know how to handle myself and I have known people to make fun of my nerdiness. One of them happened to become my Boyfriend!"
"Scorpius is different," Hugo debated. "He wasn't shoving you the whole way down the hall and he didn't try to humiliate you in front of the whole school. Sure, he called you mudblood. But that's almost nothing compared to what the girls are calling you in school."
There was a Long moment of silence where the only sound heard was the tap of my pencil against the table.
"Did you send him an invitation?" Hugo asked in a Low voice, sounding almost depressed but I was too relieved by the change of subject to care.
"Yesterday," I answered. "Dad doesn't know yet, but Vicky said he has the list of all the people arriving at the Wedding so he'll probably know soon."
"Does Mum know?"
"Yes. She's okay with it."
"Good."
At his answer I smiled warmly, "You get along with him well, don't you?"
"Well enough," he answered lightly.
"I'm Glad you're getting close," I said. "It almost makes dating Scorpius worthwhile ... not that I've seen him lately."
A wave of longing washed over me, flooding my thoughts and consuming my brain.
"Hey, what's with the frowny face?" Hugo said. "Cheer up, you'll see him tomorrow at the Wedding."
I sighed, "I know, but he hasn't owled me in weeks. Not even to confirm the wedding invite," I tucked a strip of curly bangs behind my ear. "I'm starting to wonder if he wants to come at all."
"So ask him."
"No!" I said, incredulous.
"Why not?" Hugo asked, grabbing an Apple from the fruit basket. "I mean, if you're worried you should at least have the right to ask about him. If he's fine, he'll answer. If he's run over by a car, he won't."
My eyes widened.
"But seriously, what's wrong with owling him every once in a while?"
"What's wrong is that it makes me look desperate," I snapped. "I don't want to be one of those girls who go pining over boys like they can't live without them. If Scorpius doesn't want to see me, fine. I'm not gonna chase after him like some chew toy."
"You're being ridiculous."
"I think you mean 'realistic'," I said. "Scorpius has already had tons of girls going gaga over him. He probably has them now."
The thought made me sick."You know that's not true -" Hugo said, but was suddenly cut off by the loud flapping of wings as a sleek grey owl dipped into the room.
I glanced up in surprise as the owl dropped a fancy package right in front of me with a loud thud before swooping in a circle around the room to perch on the chair beside me.
The package was hard and in the shape of a thin rectangle. Over the curly pink designs was a letter.
Can't wait to see you in this tomorrow ;) And don't even think about not wearing the heels.
- Your overgenerous Boyfriend
Silence.
Hugo and I locked gazes before my grabbed the package yanked at the lid, pulling at all the purple paper until I saw it.
Lying at the bottom of the box was silky red dress that flounced to your knees. The top was sleeveless with a veiled over chest and an intricate design laced the area around the waist, matching the ruby encrusted choker that draped over it. Two raindrop-shaped ruby earrings lay next to the necklace, specks of gold sprayed over the stone.
A pair of shiny red heels lay across the top.
