It was only a 10 minute drive to Faz’s house as he lived right next to the stadium, so I blasted some tunes on the way there from my house. Daft Punk was a must, they’re my favourite band after all. It was a perfect day, sunset just occurring, light breeze, the windows went down and the music went right up. I realised, in the song Get Lucky, when Daft Punk say “we’re up all night to get lucky” it sounds like “we rob a Mexican” and I giggled for the remainder of the journey to Owen’s house. I pulled up outside, wound the windows back up and turned the engine off. I got out of the car and grabbed my bag from the backseat, closed the door and locked it.
I began to walk up the driveway of Owen’s house when he opened the door and said:
“I heard you coming Spenny!”
“Hahaha sorry man, I just love that tune!” I replied with a chuckle.
“I know you do, haha,” he smiled. I got to the door and walked through and closed it behind me. I followed him into the living room where I was greeted by an array of suits.
“Dear god, how many suits do you plan on wearing to Linds’ birthday?” I asked a little shocked as I sat down.
“That’s my problem, I don’t know which one to wear, help me choose!! Also how did you meet our wonderful new boss?” he explained.
“Ahh we went to the same school and she often came up to our classes, as like a volunteer or something, she explained the stuff we were doing in a different way, so the lads could understand and actually learn, it was good, and I’m going to say the black one with black tie,” I told him.
“I see, do you think she will like it? What’s she like?” he asked me.
“Yeah I remember her saying something in a chemistry lesson about lads in black tie. She’s proper lovely, she’s as genuine as they get, and she’ll put everyone else before herself, why you asking me all this anyway?” I replied wondering what he was up to.
“I just wondered that’s all her being our new boss and that,” he said and diverted his gaze over to the suits as he went to pick up the black one.
“You fancy her don’t you mate?” I asked him.
“No…what makes you think that?” he said defensively.
“Just with you asking me these questions and when you asked Brad earlier if he was trying to pull her, that’s all,” I replied, still thinking he liked her.
“You got your eye on anyone?” he asked changing the subject.
“I’ll only tell you if you tell me the truth!” I exclaimed and gave him a look.
“Oh for fucks sake Ben, yes I like her, I knew about her coming in a few weeks ago, Dad got a heads up about it him kinda being involved and all that. But enough about that you like Lex don’t you? I know you do!” he looked at me with a pointed finger.
“Well yes but she’s with Wiggs, however I have a feeling it’s not going to last a lot longer, that sounds really bad, but the word is his ex is on the scene,” I explained.
“I heard that too! Good luck mate, you’ll pull yet!” Owen chuckled.
“Right come on we need to get ready, we’re due down soon,” I told him as I headed out the room and up the stairs. I heard him laugh and follow me. I’d been here many times so I knew my way around; I headed along the landing into the guest bedroom and got changed into my suit.
“Oi Ben!” I heard Owen shout.
“Yeah?” I shouted back as I finished buttoning my shirt in the mirror.
“Do you want to stay here tonight? With us getting drunk and that?” he said as he walked into my room, as I was putting my red tie on.
“Yeah that would be great, if you’re okay with that?” I replied as I turned round to put my jacket on. “Bloody hell mate, if you don’t pull Linds wearing that then there is not hope for anyone,” I said as I looked at him.
“You think so? I hope so!” he exclaimed.
“You got your phone?” I asked him.
“Yeah yeah, why?” he replied a little confused.
“So you can get a cheeky pic with her,” I chuckled. He just looked at me and laughed. “What?! I have a point!” I said.
“That you do my friend that you do. Come on we need to go, it’s only 2 minutes walk from here!” he said as we exited the room. I put my phone into my trouser pocket as we walked down the stairs. We walked out the door and I closed it behind me. We chatted about the upcoming game as we walked around the corner to get to Allianz Park, as we walked down the main driveway to the stadium we watched three cars go past, a blur of the boys and a mixture of their favourite tunes. We got to the entrance just seconds later to find it covered in lights and we walked up to the players’ lounge which now looked like a night club. We could not have imagined what was in store for us next…
