DECEMBER 1ST, 2017

SHE WAS HERE.

After thirty-three years, she was finally here. And it had taken her long enough. Squeezing Jamie's hand again, she needed that reassurance. Of course she was a bit afraid, hoping it wasn't going to be a waste of money. Throughout the past few months, she had been scraping together money to get this surgery. Before and after her kidnapping she had been saving up for this. But, thankfully, she had managed to get a small loan to pay for the other half of her surgery costs.

"Are you ready for this?" Jamie asked, and Cynthia nodded. "As ready as I'll ever be," Cynthia replied, giving a smile to Jamie. Jamie had come along with Cynthia today, acting as her caretaker for the day. Unfortunately, Beck had been fired from the company he worked for, and was planning on giving the two a ride home from the surgery, since his apartment wasn't too far from the hospital, and he could drive Jamie's car.

"Cynthia Hayes," A nurse's voice filled the waiting lobby, and Cynthia and Jamie stood up. The nurse extended the door for the two of them to come in, Cynthia glad this hospital specialized in odd-ball surgeries. This had been the hospital Tony and his ex-girlfriend had used for their own surgeries.

"I hope it's okay that my son will wait for me in my hospital room," Cynthia explained, and the nurse nodded, replying, "He is your caretaker for today?"

"Yes, he is my guardian." Cynthia replied, nodding as well. The nurse handed her a bag of hospital clothes for her to wear, and then pulled the sheet, so then the room was enclosed from the rest of the hospital ward they were in.

"This is so nerve-wracking," Cynthia said to Jamie as she pulled off her sweatpants and shirt. She handed them to Jamie, who put folded them and put them on the seat next to him. She turned away from him to put on her hospital gown and take off her bra, and put on her socks, so then her feet weren't shivering against the ice-cold floor. "But I'm ready." Cynthia put her hair into two braids neatly, and then sat down on the bed.

After the surgery was over, they would escort her out in a wheelchair, and she would spend the next few weeks in one, recovering at home. Cynthia hoped Beck would be able to get a new job soon. It was expensive living in New York. After the doctor came and went, the two waited patiently for them to take her away.

While they were waiting, a few nurses came in, asking her about mental illnesses and allergies, and asking if she had ever had an addiction to anything. Another nurse came in, giving her a shot for her IV.

Her heart was pounding, and her anxieties were going through the roof, but all Cynthia wanted to think about was the thought that Bucky might want to have a family. They'd talked about it once, back in Romania, but they hadn't since.

Cynthia also knew that she wanted to have another child. She loved Jamie so much, and having another child would be . . . Possibly another one of the best things in the world. She truly wasn't going to let anyone come in between her and her children again, she refused to let that happen.

Then the doctor and nurses came in, saying, "It's time!" Cheerfully, and readying the bed Cynthia was laying on to be wheeled on. Jamie and Cynthia gave each other a reassuring smile, one of the nurses giving her anesthesia.

Cynthia hummed under her breath, closing her eyes, and falling asleep instantly.

Sleepiness rained over her in patches.

She'd wake up for a few minutes tiredly, managing to get past her sleepy tongue and eat some jello. Then she would fall asleep again, only to wake up to a nurse attempting to talk to her.

By the time she was awake enough to do anything, Millie was there, helping the nurse dress her, and they helped her into the wheelchair. Thankfully they had given her some numbing medicine, so everything from below her breasts was numb. In the back of her cloudy mind, she hoped she wouldn't accidentally piss herself.

Millie wheeled her outside, where the cold air was bitter to her numbness, and the morning sunshine blinded her slightly. Jamie's car pulled up, and Jamie got out of the passenger seat, helping Millie get Cynthia into the backseat. Beck folded up the wheelchair and put it into the trunk, and then they were off.

This chapter was short, but i'm so excited to announce that Jamie will be getting a spin-off story after Burnt Edges is done!!

it's called "Shadow Run" and will be from Jamie's point of view, and Katie will be a main character, Beck will make appearances, and in this universe, it will start after Burnt Edges is done.

i'll tell you all the plot in the next author note, and i might even include the cover. i'm just so excited for this. i was brainstorming last night, and the plot for this spin-off hit me suddenly, and i knew i just had to do it.

oh, and all of the information for her hospital visit is taken from my own experience, so if not everything is accurate, then i apologize. but since it's all fiction, it doesn't always have to be accurate sometimes. :)

until next time!
