“That was actually so fun!” Luke gushed on our way back to the bus. I giggled at his childish grin. I didn’t know if he’d forgotten about the almost kiss or just decided to not bring it up, but either way I was grateful. That was a topic I was willing to put off for as long as I could. I didn’t like Luke in that way. He was like a best friend to me, not a lover.
When we returned to the bus, the sound of arguing could be heard. However, as soon as we made our presence known, the chatter stopped and an awkward silence set in. “What’s up guys?” Luke pondered, scratching the back of his neck. “Nothing,” Calum quickly mumbled. “Just...talking about....stuff.”
I raised my eyebrows at him as he quickly scurried out of the room, Michael following shortly after. Another silence, one even more awkward than the first, embraced the atmosphere. “I’m, uh, gonna go have a shower,” I stated, clearing my throat. Ashton’s hard gaze shot to me and I immediately looked away. “Okay, when you’re done, I think we’re all going out for dinner.” His voice was flat as he spoke, almost robotic. I just nodded as I left the room quickly.
Once I was in the shower, I allowed myself to get lost in my thoughts. This was my favorite place to think. A mixture of the water softly falling and the warm pellets hitting my skin brought a feeling of safety that I loved more than anything. I felt as if it was my safe haven, all most.
Once I had finished, I got out and put on a pair of white skinny jeans, galaxy vans, and a grey sweatshirt with the yin-yang symbol on it. I quickly blew dry my dark and left it down in soft waves, putting on minimal makeup as I was never a huge fan of it. It made me feel fake.
After I’d grabbed my phone off the charger, I made my way out to the main area of the bus to see Calum and Michael had returned and they were all playing video games. All except Ashton, that is.
He was texting on his phone, yet still laughing and chatting with the boys. I found myself smiling when Calum cracked a joke and Ashton’s loud, infectious laughter filled the room. His laugh had always infatuated me. It was different. Sometimes it was a little giggle, other times it was booming laughter. No matter what it was, however, I'd always loved it, even though I hated him.
“Agh,I give up,” Luke groaned frustratedly, throwing himself back on the couch. “You guys win.” He glanced over and noticed me in the doorway, an amused smirk on my face and his eyes lit up. “Hi Paisley!” he greeted.
I giggled and waved at him. “Hey Lukey.” Michael pouted, turning off the game and turning to look at me. “Don’t I get a hello with a cute nickname?” I giggled again as I rolled my eyes, “Hello Mikey.”
Calum opened his mouth, but I put my hand up to stop him. “Yes, Calza, you get a hello too.” He clapped his hands, grinning. “Yay! Thank you Pais!”
I laughed as I plopped down on a chair and pulled out my phone, checking twitter. All the other boys had become engrossed in a conversation about God knows what, so I was surprised when I felt the presence of someone beside me. My shock could only grow when I turned to see it was none other than Ashton.
“What do you want?” I mumbled, my voice coated in ice. “Well, a sign of acknowledgment would be nice,” he countered, his eyebrows furrowed together. “I know I was horrible to you, but that was years ago. I’ve changed.”
I gave him an incredulous look. “You’re joking right? Do you not remember what the second thing you said to me when I got here was, embarrassing me in front of everyone?” He shook his head, looking more confused.
“You said, and I quote, “Oh yeah! We went to school together! You were the girl everyone hated and I was the guy everyone wanted!” In addition to that, every time I look at your you’re glaring at me, and I know it was you in the auditorium earlier.” He shifted uncomfortably, fumbling with his hands.
“So what if I was in the auditorium? Maybe I just wanted to hear you sing. And the reason I said that was because you pretended not to know me! You were embarrassing me! I had to say something and it just kind of slipped out!” He argued. I rolled my eyes.
“Whatever, Ashton. Since you apparently didn't get the message, the reason I was acting as if I didn't know you was because I want you to leave me alone. I spent years trying to regain my confidence. Years telling myself that I’m okay and things are going to get better. So it would be appreciated if you left me alone. Sound good?”
I didn’t wait for him to reply as I stood up and stormed off the bus, sitting on a bench stationed right outside. The fact that he could approach me and ask me why I was being so cold was mind boggling. He was the one being a jerk, not me!
I heard the bus door open and close as Luke came to sit beside me. “Are you alright?” he asked, his voice gentle and sincere. I expelled a soft breath, “No...not really...”
“What’s going on, love?” “Ashton’s just...he’s been a jerk to me. He insulted me, and glares at me, and when he talks, he acts as if he’s so bored. Then he comes up to me and asks why I’m being cold, telling me he’s changed. And it’s just so...so annoying!”
Luke chuckled and my gaze shot to him. “Luke,” I whined. “This isn’t funnyyy.” He just continued to chuckle. “You don’t see it, do you?” He pondered. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “See what?”
He just shook his head, standing up and holding his hand out for me. “Nothing, nothing. Now come on, we’re going to Maccas!” He began to skip, pulling me with him. I giggled at his childish behavior, pushing the thought of whatever he was talking about me seeing to the back of my mind.
I was done wasting time worrying about Ashton. I was done with Ashton. He couldn’t hurt me anymore. He had no affect on me.
...Okay, maybe he still has a little affect on me.
